We booked a tent sight for the launch of the STS-126 Endeavour for two nights. We had a map of the campground from last spring and they had changed the location of the sites so we ended up being in a different location than our map showed. We did like that although the tent sights in our area were close together there was adequate foliage between them so you couldn't see your neighbors. We have a large ten and had a difficult time finding adequate space for it. Most of the ground at our site had stumps, debris or exposed roots that make it dangerous for tent bottoms.
Jetty Park does not allow wood fires only gas or charcoal grills which quite honestly stinks! Camping is all about the fire and although we knew their policy we seriously underestimated the impact it would have on our experience. We never cooked a meal there and the kids were excited about making popcorn and smores but quickly lost interest. The grill was filthy and had significant holes from rust in it. Thanks for the garbage left in it from previous occupants.
The bath/shower house was near our site. They only have 3 toilet stalls, 3 showers and 2 sinks so there is usually a wait. In the evenings there is a foul odor from the bathroom and I am not sure why. The building was not cleaned the entire weekend. There was a lot of sand and debris in the shower and although I always were flip flops in them it was still kind of nasty.
The amount of litter laying around the park in the bushes, at the sites and around the fences was tremendous! Even my 9yo was shocked and disgusted by the litter. Our family policy is to leave our site in better condition than we found it and I have to confess that there wasn't enough time to pick up all of the trash!
The area seems to have a problem with ferral cats. I saw it mentioned in literature related to the park asking occupants not to feed them. Both nights we stayed we could hear them fighting in the bushes outside of our tent. The last night we were there I actually thought they were locked inside our tent they were so close! Yes, I know better than to leave food or trash for them so they were not attracted to our sight for that reason. We did see lots of them roaming during the day. It seems to me that the city/county could do something to round them up and spay/neuter them to help with the population explosion.
Friday morning about 7 am we could hear a loud horn from a cruise ship coming in. I actually didn't mind that as our kids are usually up by then anyway. HOWEVER, on Saturday night around 2 am we were awoken to a VERY LOUD live band and whooping and hollering from people coming into port on what I assume was the casino party boat. Oh my goodness was it loud! It also lasted for 30-45 minutes as the came down the canal. Keep in mind our site was on the opposite side of the campground from the ships! Also, I think there is a group of campers that have RV's that are set next to eachother. Approximately 5 families. Anyway, there is a 10pm quiet request in the rules but this group apparently is exempt. They had their large screen tv out under the awning with everyone watching the game. The sound from the tv was pretty loud and then when a play they liked occured....the shouting began. Security went around several times but never seemed to pay any attention to them. Bring ear plugs!
