“Awesome and Authentic Caving Experience - you will get dirty”
Review of Nikau Cave

Nikau Cave
Ranked #1 of 1 things to do in Waikaretu

Hard hats, flash light - that's it. No railings, stairs, guide posts or anything of the like. You will be crawling through streams, in narrow gaps of rock, jumping over rocks and within inches of amazing stalactities and stalagmites. and of course you will see the awesome glow worms. This is one of the most amazing authentic caving experiences out there.
This is relatively challenging for those with knee problems, very overweight or if you are particularly out of shape or if you are claustrophobic. For over an hour, you will have a taste for what a cave is really all about.
You will love it.

Kids will definitely love this trip, dont be afraid to take them. But there is an age limit so call ahead.

End of with a relaxing coffee at the nice little cafe.

Kids (and parents) loved it, crawling through narrow tunnels, wading through knee high water in some stages and clambering over rocks. Hard hats, no lighting, just a torch. One laid back farmer guide for 5 of us. The 1hr 30 trip over fields and through a 1km underground cave with running stream was challenging enough for Miss 6 nearly 7, so not for the faint hearted or kids/big people who are not fairly agile or scared of the dark. Highly recommend the coffee in the cafe too (they roast their own), stunning spot for lunch or a picnic. Pays to ring ahead to book - its on a working farm.

Wow! Skip the touristy group excursions and experience the real caves. The guide will take you 1km hike through the underground caves. You will not get a more authentic experience in seeing stalagmites and glow worms. There are some challenging spots which may test your claustrophobia, but if I can get through the caves, you can too! You will also get a little wet so bring tennis shoes that can get wet and dirty. Don't miss out on on the cafe on the property as well. Very good lunch, coffee and fresh local organic beers.

We got there and the guide was having a sleep cos he'd been out shearing so we had a nice coffee , the café is lovely. The guide is over 60 yrs and had a dry larconic sense of humour. The caves were challenging, not touristy like Waitomo. I think it is a bit pricey tho.

Last week visited the cave and really enjoyed the trip and the adventure. We did not have a lot of trouble going the track, although unfit persons might have some problems. The guide was very friendly and helpful. The first part before reaching the caves leads up through a sheep paddock. The trip through the cave is a natural wonder as not the easiest way to go crawling sometimes through the water and squeezing between rocks, worth the effort when entering the higher part. All the way was surrounded by stalagmites and stalagtites and lots of glowworms.
We did not visit the cafe, but drove down direction Hamilton via the gravel coast road and saw the sunset; a must when visiting this area.
