The Bantam Chef is tucked into an area at the corner of US 1 and State Rt 100 in the center of Bunnell. Parking is plentiful either on site or nearby. The "restaurant" is a building with two windows (one for ordering and one for pick-up), with a practically illegible menu board from the 1970s, picnic tables for diners, paper and plastic. Make no mistake, one orders "The Fish Sandwich" here...yes there are other items, but the fish is the dish!
The writer upon hearing his number, picked up the bag and lifted what he thought were two fish sandwiches, but was really just one of the two....yes, it is that big. The sandwich was loaded with what appeared to be 12-14 ounces of fried fish along with the loaded tartar, pickles, tomatoes and lettuce. The sandwich defies being eaten in a traditional manner....there is just too much fish to contain. The taste of the pollock is fresh and was perfectly cooked. After much struggle the diners finished their sandwiches to their own amazement, but had no room for anything else. The cost....$7.40 per sandwich....incredible.
One goes here for "The Fish Sandwich" in this completely unpretentious atmosphere. The excellent rating is given because the Bantam Chef is true to its claim and for what it is....a place to get the best fish sandwich.
