My wife and I tried Gatsbys Pizza at their old location in North Naples in 2009 and found it to be a very good thin crust pizza with spicy pepperoni that tasted great. When we heard they had reopened in Bonita Springs, we decided we had to have another pizza from there. This time, though, we were very disappointed.
The new location is larger and well adorned with flat panel televisions to watch college sports games, and as before, the walls are lined with Ohio team memorabilia. If you're from Ohio, you'll be in heaven, I guess. The atmosphere, to me, was adequate. We were disappointed and did not understand why it states on the menu that pizzas take 25 minutes to make. Their website indicates 30 minutes. If they were making deep dish pies, this would be understandable, but a thin crust pizza should not take a half hour to prep and bake. Since we got there at 7:30, the restaurant was busy and it was understandable that getting your meal may take a little longer than usual, but to state this on the menu was unexplainable. It took 35 minutes to get our pizza, even longer than stated. To pass the time, we ordered cheese garlic bread, which was good.
The pizza was not what we remembered. It was a thin crust pizza, but not as thin as we remembered or wanted. The crust was not crisp because it appeared that it needed to be left in the oven for another couple of minutes. However, the pepperoni was over cooked, curled up with a burned flavor instead of the spicy taste we remembered. I'm not sure what was wrong with the pizza's cooking - the top was burned but the crust needed additional cooking. Possibly the temperature of the oven was set incorrectly. Regardless, the flavor was poor, probably from the sauce or lack of spices they use and the pizza was not enjoyable. The one positive thing that can be said about the pizza was the amount of toppings was very good and it had ample cheese. This partially made up for what we considered to be a very poor value since the price of a two topping 14" pizza is $18.00.
I don't mind spending $20 for two people at a pizza joint if the product is good, but this trip to Gatsbys with tip set us back $33. The pizza was not as good as a Pizza Hut pie, but cost twice as much. We prefer independent restaurant pizzas over chains and will pay more for a better product, but that was not the case with Gatsbys. We will not return.
