“Nice getaway for day in the sun”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

Friends were visiting from Washington DC and we decided to rent a boat from Jensen's on Captiva and boat out to Cabbage Key for lunch. Had a wonderful day. I had not been to the restaurant in probably 15 years. It is a unique place, just as I remembered. We were in the mood for burgers and ate outside and enjoyed the food and views. The dock master was a young man who was very helpful and pleasant. I would recommend visiting. My friends were talking about coming back and renting a cottage at some point.

It is nice to read that you and your friends had an enjoyable day on the water visiting Cabbage Key. Cabbage Key has probably not changed much in the past 15 years...but, all of the accommodations have been updated and remodeled. Have your friends give us a call to check dates and reserve! Come see us again soon!

Of course we had the Cheeseburger in Paradise. And it was as wonderful as described in the tune of the same name. Dinner was just as good. As was breakfast the next morning. Staff greeted us like we were family; went out of their way to pamper us. We like pampering. We walked the trails, climbed the water tower. We would have enjoyed having more places to explore, but then having Adirondack chairs in the shade and a couple of good books were marvelous substitutes. The dockmaster was on holiday, so we couldn't determine whether he was as malevolent as others had claimed, but the assistant dockmaster was gracious, even taking time to identify and chat with us about fish near the docks. Our room was cozy and spotless. There was no television, so we made our own entertainment. It was all lots of fun.

This is a very fun & unique place to go. You should do it at least once. The bar/restaurant is really cool. There are one dollar bills all over the walls & ceiling. They donate the money that falls off once a year to a local school. Their food is so fresh & delicious. Everyone I was with had the catch of the day with rice & beans. It was so good. They gave my boyfriend a piece of key lime pie for his birthday which was also delicious. The people that worked there were so friendly. I would love to go back. It would be my favorite place to eat if it was in my neighborhood.

We are happy to hear that you and your group had a fun visit to Cabbage Key. Our back porch and bar area are covered in $1 bills - totaling about $100,000.00. When the money falls off the walls we collect it and donate it to different local charities. I will let the staff know how much you enjoyed your food and service. Thanks again for visiting and hope you can come back soon!

We live in Cape Coral and have visited Cabbage Key several times. We have boated out with friends and used our own boat as well (boat club). I also read some of critical reviews. I have not encountered any difficulty with the dock or restaurant staff. During the "season" it can get very busy when the shuttle boats arrive with visitors. If you time your visit a little early or late you can avoid the crowds. They are used to the dally crush around lunchtime so they can manage the crowds well. If you go during busy time just relax and enjoy the island life!

Thank you for writing about your visit to Cabbage Key. We do get extremely busy at lunch...especially in season. To avoid some of the crowds - we recommend coming in for lunch around 11:15 am or after 2:30pm. Thank you again for visiting and we hope to see you again soon!

My husband and I were renting a boat this week and wanted to see what Cabbage Key was all about. Decided to come in for lunch. We were aware of the dock master, who was not very friendly, but was accomodating with our docking in a very small tight marina. We went inside for lunch and were very disappointed. First the stone crab legs were recommended by the staff so we ordered the appetizer portion not knowing that this would cost us $40, then my husband had the famous burger which was dry and tastless. Views and location are beautiful but bring your own food.

Thank you for writing about your recent visit to Cabbage Key. I am sorry to read that you were not satisfied with your lunch. I have shared your comments with the management team so they can address the service issue with the servers - they need to let the guest know how much the fresh, local Stone Crab Claws cost. I have also shared your comments with the chef regarding the bland hamburger. Thank you again for sharing you experience.

Our family stayed at South Seas and was told about Cabbage Key. We decided to rent a boat and spend a day on the water. As soon as we pulled up to the dock we were NOT greeted by a friendly dock master but by an obviously miserable and very sarcastic man. We did enjoy being greeted by the ducks as we walked up the stairs into the restaurant. We were then greeted by the hostess who looked like she had either a serious hangover or had just a rough life. We decided to sit on the patio so we could enjoy the beautiful view and weather. Our server was very polite, can't remember her name although she mentioned she was from Michigan. She recommended the Cabbage Key Creeper and Planters Punch, they were small for the price but we were able to enjoy them as we calmed down from our encounter with the dock Nazi. Our server also recommended that we try the salmon appetizer, we really liked that and for lunch I ordered the shrimp salad and my husband ordered the burger. The food was ok. Nothing special considering we spent almost $60 just on lunch. Very disappointing! The island was pretty and our server was very polite and cute. Other than that nothing exciting there!

Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent trip to Cabbage Key. I am sorry to hear that your first impression of Cabbage Key was not a positive one. I have notified upper management about your experience so they can address your issues with the dock master. I am happy to hear that Marcie, your server, helped to make your lunch a bit more enjoyable. I hope that one day you will come back to give us another try.

I've stayed on Cabbage Key several times over the last 8 years and the staff and service is always top notch. The cottages are well maintained and the food in the restaurant is always fresh and well prepared. Lunch time around the boat docks is always entertaining. Between the novice boat captains that have more boat than brains and the myriad of boats being guided by an overworked but very talented Harbor Master, it often can be a scene straight out of "The Boatniks".
Evenings in Cabbage Key are a different story. The restaurant is transformed into a fine dining experience and life on the island is often very quiet and seems far removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. You can't go wrong with a 1 night or 1 week stay.

Room Tip: Several cottages have the pine floors and paneling and are beautifully maintained.

Thank you for sharing your comments. The Cabbage Key Marina during the day can be very hectic - 100's of boats and on a busy day we can serve over 800 lunches! No wonder our dock master gets a little crabby! But, the atmosphere changes at night, the Island quiets down, and our guests feel like they are on their own private Island. Thank you for taking the time to write about your experiences and we hope to see you soon!

Cabbage Key is a 100 acre island located five miles off of Pine Island, FL in the Pine Island Sound. The Inn, built in the 1940's by the family of Mary Roberts Rinehart, now houses our famous Restaurant & Dollar Bill Bar and six guest rooms. The rooms in the Inn are all different with old Florida charm - they do not have TVs, phones, or refrigerators. We have seven cottages on the island, ranging from a 1 bedroom/1 bath cottage to 3 bedroom/3 bath waterfront units. All cottages have refrigerators, televisions (no cable) and coffee makers, some units have full kitchens. Our restaurant is open seven days a week and serves breakfast, lunch & dinner. If you want to relax on a beach...we do not have one here. But, Cayo Costa is a close kayak or boat ride away. This is a great retreat to discover "Old Florida", relax with a book, fish from our docks & watch the boats go by. ... more   less
