I had heard so much about Cabbage Key from friends so while we were staying on Captiva Island we took a boat tour to the island and spent a few hours there. The island has no beaches, is densely covered with native vegetation and has lots of native mosquitoes making our island walk fast and short! I was lucky to see some orchids in bloom and a tortoise strolling along the path but since I was fighting the pesky bugs my enjoyment was stifled. I had thought that I might want to spend a few days on the island but I have decided that I have been there and done that and don't need to return. I can get the same experience in the wonderful Florida State Parks with less bugs.
After our walk my husband and I had lunch in the Cabbage Key Inn, a quaint old building with no air conditioning but screened in with a nice view of the "jungle" habitat. It was oppressively hot that day and even with ceiling fans blowing we were melting. The service is quite slow but friendly. The food is basic at best, lots of fried options and burgers. I opted for the black bean soup which was quite good but not so good that I would want to stick around in this heat. Maybe it would be a nice place to visit in the winter, not in August!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Cabbage Key is a 100 acre island located five miles off of Pine Island, FL in the Pine Island Sound. The Inn, built in the 1940's by the family of Mary Roberts Rinehart, now houses our famous Restaurant & Dollar Bill Bar and six guest rooms. The rooms in the Inn are all different with old Florida charm - they do not have TVs, phones, or refrigerators. We have seven cottages on the island, ranging from a 1 bedroom/1 bath cottage to 3 bedroom/3 bath waterfront units. All cottages have refrigerators, televisions (no cable) and coffee makers, some units have full kitchens. Our restaurant is open seven days a week and serves breakfast, lunch & dinner. If you want to relax on a beach...we do not have one here. But, Cayo Costa is a close kayak or boat ride away. This is a great retreat to discover "Old Florida", relax with a book, fish from our docks & watch the boats go by. ... more less
