“Really Really Good”
Review of Duck King - CLOSED

We finally found a Chinese restaurant that offers really really good food accompanied by nice service. The place is way understated from the outside but once your inside, it's quite nice. Tables are nicely set and they actually have cloth napkins and real silverware. So much better than a Pei Wei experience on all levels - just sayin'. We have lunch at the restaurant and dinner as takeout and both were the same quality and consistency.

Writing this review is bittersweet as we want to share the good news but still want to get in once the word is out.

If you are looking for old fashioned bland Chinese food this is not the place to go, but if your taste runs to a lot more authentic and varied offerings there is no better place than this in the Boca area. Located in a strip mall on S. Federal Highway near Jeffrey St., the restaurant is easy to miss, but on a recent Saturday night, every table was taken (many by the local Chinese community), there was an active take out business, and people were waiting to be seated. The food is uniformly excellent. Our dishes included shredded pork in garlic sauce, rainbow vegetable stir fry, and sliced pork with mixed vegetables, all of which were superb. Our earlier visit included without a doubt the best General Tso's chicken I have ever eaten (crispy chunks of breast meat), and orange beef.

Here are the down sides:
1. Menu descriptions are scanty and explanations are needed from the wait staff as to what is in the various dishes.
2. The kitchen can be slow especially on crowded evenings.
3. Prices are beyond what you normally see at local Chinese restaurants, averaging in the $16-$20 range for main courses.
4. White or fried rice is included with the meal, but brown rice (which I prefer) is $1.75 - just silly.
5. Service can be chaotic; the wait staff is well intentioned and polite, but not entirely professional.
6. They do sometimes run out of items; they were out of duck rolls (Duck King?) at 6PM on a recent visit.
7. There is no separate lower priced lunch menu, so if you go for lunch be prepared to pay full dinner prices, or to share one entree.

In summary, Duck King offers exceptional quality and variety food, but with the caveats noted above. It is very much worth a visit if you're looking for something beyond traditional neighborhood Chinese food.
