Owner description: This 20 acre coastal preserve is a destination you don’t want to miss! Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of tropical hardwood hammock, located on a barrier island in Boca Raton. Take a stroll through the butterfly garden, where many species of wild butterflies can be seen year-round. Walk the Ashley Trail and relax in the authentic Chiki overlooking the Intracoastal. A variety of native fish, sharks, and other marine animals reside in marine aquariums. Visit the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility to learn about our sea turtle patients. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a series of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500s. Florida Atlantic University has an onsite marine biology laboratory with a gallery for viewing research projects conducted by university scientists. Purchase imaginative and environmentally friendly gifts from our nature-themed gift shop. Note: Our boardwalk loop and tower are closed for renovation. Please visit our website for updates.

This is a must do..run by volunteers...amazing fish, sharks, lobsters, rays, turtles all in natural settings. Plus a board walk and educational facilities. Only $5 suggested donation each. Incredible. Volunteers are amongst the most knowledgeable we have come across.

“Favorite place to visit in Boca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014 via mobile

This is truly one of the neatest places to visit in the Boca Raton area. I have been here several times now, but each time I learn something new and have a great time.

Admission is by donation only; however, the $5 suggested donation is very reasonable, especially considering the great work Gumbo Limbo does with sea turtle rescue and conservation. The nature center includes several exhibits on the local flora and fauna. The nature trail is a neat boardwalk through mangrove forests and includes a canopy tower that provides spectacular views of the ocean and intercostal waterway. The butterfly garden is neat too.

The nature center recently built new tanks that house a variety of sea animals. The best part, of course, is the sea turtle rehabilitation area. They have several tanks in which they are helping injured and diseases sea turtles regain their health so that they may return to the ocean. Volunteer staff are extremely knowledgable and friendly. You should also check out the sea turtle lab that houses baby sea turtles. An overlook provides a great view of the several tanks and dozens of small sea turtles.

This is a great attraction for families with young children or teens, friends, older couples, or even if you're just by yourself. I will continue to visit when I am in the area.

“Fun visit, great animals, friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014 via mobile

We had a great time! We were lucky to find that we had arrived minutes before feeding time in the huge tanks, so all the creatures were extremely active! Also, the staff people were available, knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to chat with us. We learned a lot about all the animals there, the local wildlife, and the turtle rescue operations.

The highlight, after the sea turtles: the huge and creepy moray eel Mortimer. Try to get there at feeding time so you can watch him move!

“Free and fun for the whole family.”

A trip to Gumbo Limbo is a must every time I visit South Florida. A little gen in Boca Raton very close to beaches and shopping too! Make sure you dress for the outdoors as most of this experience is walking outside. There is no formal fee, but this place runs entirely from donations, so anything helps. All the volunteers here are very helpful and extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife. On my last visit a sea turtle was brought in that had a fishing hook stuck in it. we were able to see the turtle up close and watched the removal!!

A must see if you enjoy the ocean wildlife of South Florida!

“Educational and Thought Provoking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014 via mobile

Gumbo Limbo was an interesting place where we met large sea turtles who were being rehabbed. We saw a large variety of sea life in mock habitats. The workers explained how and why the sealife was at the center. There was good information about trash and the life expectancy of each type. Made a thoughtful experience.
