Owner description: This 20 acre coastal preserve is a destination you don’t want to miss! Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of tropical hardwood hammock, located on a barrier island in Boca Raton. Take a stroll through the butterfly garden, where many species of wild butterflies can be seen year-round. Walk the Ashley Trail and relax in the authentic Chiki overlooking the Intracoastal. A variety of native fish, sharks, and other marine animals reside in marine aquariums. Visit the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility to learn about our sea turtle patients. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a series of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500s. Florida Atlantic University has an onsite marine biology laboratory with a gallery for viewing research projects conducted by university scientists. Purchase imaginative and environmentally friendly gifts from our nature-themed gift shop. Please note picnicking is not permitted.

...Like ours did. The staff is friendly and endlessly patient in answering kids' queries, and the whole place has a wonderful hippie, save-the-whales vibe that is intoxicating. We went one night at 8:30 for a turtle watch and saw a fox in the trees surrounding the parking lot! The turtle watch, which I was, frankly, dreading, turned out to be truly fascinating as we watched the massive mom-turtle disgorge her giant load of eggs. I am not exactly nature boy but I'd go again in a heartbeat. It's free, too, but you'd better donate to save those cute little turtlets!

My husban was taking a job training in boca and I stay with my 4 years old boy there because we saw this on tripadvisor and decide to went there. The volunteers are amazing very knowledgeable and the facilities were beautiful . We love to meet butter the lobster and my son was amazed when they feed the fishes. Maybe you can spend 3 or 4 hours there. Nice souvenir shopbut nothing to purchase for a snack.

We went on a school field trip with a group of 1st & 2nd graders. Kids had a great time going on the boardwalk through the forest and then checking out the tanks with turtles, rays, fish, etc. Everyone had a good laugh at the HUGE lobster names Butter. The new tanks they have are really nice over what they had last time I was there. A definite fun and educational trip.

All the volunteers at Gumbo Limbo are genuinely committed to help nature and to show the visitors how everybody can make a difference in this world. The sea turtle centre is a great place to learn about this amazing animals, and the brand new fish tanks show fish typical of South Florida that you might not want to meet in person in the ocean (i.e. sharks). The butterfly garden offers a romantic atmosphere and great picture opportunity. Go with your friends or your children, there's something for everybody.
