Owner description: This 20 acre coastal preserve is a destination you don’t want to miss! Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of tropical hardwood hammock, located on a barrier island in Boca Raton. Take a stroll through the butterfly garden, where many species of wild butterflies can be seen year-round. Walk the Ashley Trail and relax in the authentic Chiki overlooking the Intracoastal. A variety of native fish, sharks, and other marine animals reside in marine aquariums. Visit the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Facility to learn about our sea turtle patients. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a series of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may have appeared in the 1500s. Florida Atlantic University has an onsite marine biology laboratory with a gallery for viewing research projects conducted by university scientists. Purchase imaginative and environmentally friendly gifts from our nature-themed gift shop. Please note picnicking is not permitted.

“Butter the Lobster”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We went on a school field trip with a group of 1st & 2nd graders. Kids had a great time going on the boardwalk through the forest and then checking out the tanks with turtles, rays, fish, etc. Everyone had a good laugh at the HUGE lobster names Butter. The new tanks they have are really nice over what they had last time I was there. A definite fun and educational trip.

“A great way to spend a fun afternoon and learn about Florida wildlife”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

All the volunteers at Gumbo Limbo are genuinely committed to help nature and to show the visitors how everybody can make a difference in this world. The sea turtle centre is a great place to learn about this amazing animals, and the brand new fish tanks show fish typical of South Florida that you might not want to meet in person in the ocean (i.e. sharks). The butterfly garden offers a romantic atmosphere and great picture opportunity. Go with your friends or your children, there's something for everybody.

“Go at 2:15! Feelings at 230”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

This was a great family outing for a cloudy day when you aren't going to the beach. The animal feelings are at 2:30 daily. This is the best part, and the time to go. We have been twice. On the nature walk we saw interesting spiders, black snake and other creatures. The lady took a rat snake out of the tank and my sons got to pet it. They loved this part. The animal feeding were interesting bc the volunteer gave a lot of intersting info on the sea life. Wish we could have gotten a closer look at the rescued sea turtles. It is free to get in and you may make a donation if you want. The "sand away house"in delay beach is similar and excellent. They do their shark feelings daily at 10:30

“My son raved about it...”
Reviewed October 20, 2012

I don't really give a review on some place I personally have not went BUT...my son is one picky 11 year old and his 5th grade class went here and he loved it. I have since researched it and it is attached to one of the most family friendly beaches in the Boca area. I have only heard wonderful things and plan to go back...most likely today with the family.

“Not just for kids. VERY knowledgeable staff”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Great little place we really enjoyed our selfs. They have very knowledgeable staff and volunteers that go out of their way to ensure you have all the information you are interested in. We (two adults) spent probably 2.5 hours here and really loved it.

They do great work here helping injured animals with the focus being turtles. You get a chance to see a number or turtles that are in different phases of recovery. The volunteers and staff are more than happy to provide you with all type of background on the patients as wells as the operations some must go under.

They also have some nice fish tanks. The place is not huge but it was a nice varrity and since it is not that large you feel that you can take some time to really enjoy the creatures and learn some interesting info.

There are also some trails/boardworks that were enjoyable to get some feel the natural plant life. As well as a tower from which you can get a nice view.

All that and it is free. Including parking.
