“Great Biking”

Boca Grande Bike Trail
Reviewed May 29, 2013

The bike trail is wide and traverses through the center of the peninsula. It's relaxing and allows you to see all of the sights of Boca Grande.

An old railroad converted to a bike/people and golfcart path. It is wide enought to ride two abreast on bike and lots of places to turn off to to see some of the amazing house that dot the beaches on the water side. Hot during the day, make sure you have a hat and some water. Golf carts need horns to warn you as they sneek up on you ... after biking toward the mainland we saw a Ben and Jerry's sign for ice cream dropped in and grabbed a pint and two spoons ..

We had a good time on the trail, converted from the rail line that used to run the island. Our trip started and the Boca Grande Resort and ended after seeing the lighthouse ans stopping for lunch. Earlier morning allowed us to be in shade which was welcome in the Florida sun.
The trail is well maintained and the view of many homes is extremely pleasant. It feels like uphill both ways but it is flat I am sure all the way. It could have just been the bike seat! :)

Currently six bucks to get over the toll bridge. We throw the bikes in the back of our van - I wouldn't recommend riding your bikes over the bridges.

We park at the first spot on the island on the left by Gill's Grocery (good sandwiches for the ride). Hop on the bikes and head south. It's about 7.5 miles down to the lighthouse and state park on the tip of the island. Don't miss this spot - this is Boca Grande Pass where they catch all the tarpon. On the way back we bike down all the streets and around the town. Several places to eat in town. Beaches are all public, so once you hit the beach you can walk anywhere. Extremely safe island, so you can leave your bikes when you look around without worry. We always use just one small chain to put around the bikes, but I doubt it is necessary. Don't forget to stop in the marinas and the Gasparilla Inn.

By the end of the day we have ridden about twenty miles and had a fantastic day!

This is a nice paved trail for a walk or an easy bike ride. It's best in the morning before it gets too busy with golf carts - watch out for those! Most drivers are willing to share the road; others seem to be just as happy to run you over. For most of the distance, there is also an unpaved trail next to the paved one.
