My Wife, 8 year old Grandson and I stayed from 6/25/08 - 7/2/08.

This was our second trip to the keys and we were looking for economical accommodations. Our needs were a clean, comfortable room to use for showering and sleeping. Our room had two-double queen size beds that were quite comfortable to sleep on. There was a full size shower situated behind a door with a commode and a large mirror, counter and basin just outside from it. We were on the second floor end room facing the pool.

The pool was visited by our grandson first thing in the morning and whenever we stopped for a change of clothes or shower. It was very clean and taken care of throughout the day. My wife and I joined him on several occasions.

No phone in our room was not a problem because we used our cell phone for all our calls. The TV was a small 20 inch color set but had a good selection of cable channels.
The balcony overlooking the pool was a nice place to sit and watch our grandson splash and play.

The air conditioning was nominal during the heat of the day, but cooled the room well after the sun set. Being an end room exposed an additional wall and it faced west. There are louvered windows across the top front of the room that leaked air. If they would seal them it would probably make all the difference. Again for sleeping, we were pulling the blanket over us through the night.

An added bonus was “The Cracked Egg”, a restaurant located in the hotel parking lot. The restaurant was open for breakfast and lunch only. Nearly every morning we ate there and were never disappointed in the food. Some of the best biscuits and gravy I’ve had! Everything we ordered seemed to come with enhanced proportions…

We used the hotel for ‘home base’ during the week and had a full itinerary. Our room more than met our expectations. For the economy, location and amenities, I will not hesitate staying there again.

My husband and I were interested in seeing Big Pine Key so that in the future we could bring our kayaks down there and enjoy the wonderful trails and hopefully, catch some fresh fish. We stayed at the Big Pine Motel for the night and found that it was very pleasant, more so than expected. They provided lush, soft yellow towels and the bathroom had a fluffy yellow carpet which felt wonderful underfoot. I don't remember staying at a motel that had such big, fragrant towels and that was definitely a plus. The beds were comfortable and they provided everything you needed for coffee in the morning including utensils and cups, paper towels and of course, coffee! That's nice, since the restaurant close by was closed for some reason. The folks in the office were friendly and helpful. The only downside we could notice was the smokey smell emitting from the office, otherwise, we had a very pleasant stay.

Big Pine Key Motel was by far the FILTHIEST place we have ever stayed in the USA. Whatever you do, DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!

The bathrooms were full of mouse droppings, there were ants throughout the entire room, and my wife, daughter and I all woke up covered with bites on our bodies from the bedbugs!!! We checked out immediately and would never recommend that ANYONE ever stay at that filth-ridden place. It should be condemned by the Dept of Health!!!

The rates they charge are also amazingly horrible: $120 for a weekend, and right around $100 for weekdays. Don't let the $79 per night stuff fool you.... They will hit you with taxes and fees and you'll pay around $100 or more to stay in the filthiest, most unsanitary motel in all of Florida. I am NOT over exaggerating this.... it is absolutely horrendous.

If you're still not convinced, consider the fact that all of the other user reviews mentioned the phones being "temporarily out of service" over the past 2 years.... Well we were just there in April 2005 and now the phones are just sitting unplugged on a shelf over the TV and the mgmnt. just says "Ya, the phones don't work here" and thats it. (you'd think they could fix the phones during a 3 year period) The floors are covered with black grime, the toilet had orange/yellow stains all over the inside AND the outside.... The shower floor was so rotted, black and moldy that we didn't dare set foot in it, and the sink drain was missing and the pipes were all rusted and rotted out. The ice machine is broken so you have to go to the smoke infested reeking lobby and ask the manager to go fill your bucket from his personal fridge if you want ice..... YIKES. And plan on having your clothes reek of cigarette smoke if you spend even 30 seconds in the lobby. You'll want to take a bath in Clorox or disinfectant after going in the rooms, and take plenty of bedbug skin treatment lotion if you lay on the beds because you WILL get bitten by something.

Oh, and by the way the maids actually have the audacity to put an envelope requesting tips on your nightstand. Go ahead and wipe the dust and filth off the nightstand and tip away if you're crazy enough to stay here.

NEED I GO ANY FURTHER???

I honestly would not set foot in the Big Pine Key Motel if it were $15.00 per night, let alone be ripped off again for $100 per night. DO NOT STAY HERE... DO NOT EVEN ENTERTAIN THE THOUGHT.

Stay at Parmer's on Little Torch Key, or choose from about 30 places on Marathon Key. You'll still be close to Bahia Honda, great diving/snorkeling and anything else near Big Pine Key so you don't need to worry about being close to the attractions.

We have thousands of customers that stay with us each year, and 99.9% of them are pleased with our accommodations and PRICES!!! If you are not pleased with our facilities, we will certainly offer you a refund (unless you stay "overnight", and "then" want a refund).

Not exactly the Ritz... but I usually stay here since it's the cheapest around when I'm working in the area.

Some problems...
-carpets are old and stained
-decor is minimal and even hospital-like if you end up in the rooms with the all-white bed covers
-no telephones in the rooms (supposedly they were "temporarily out of order" during my stay in Feb 2005 but they were also out of order when I stayed there a few months ago.)
-old fashioned key system- no computerized key cards
-The motel serves as the bus stop for Greyhound and a lot of construction crews stay here, so if you are a single female traveling alone (or even not alone), be forewarned.

My husband and I stayed at the Big Pine Motel on the night of July 11, 2004. For the price and from their website, I wasn't expecting too much. Even taking that into consideration, a night's stay at this motel is not worth the $79 (plus tax) that they charge you. There were ants all over the room, crawling on the t.v., crawling on the bed, crawling all over the counters. The bedsheets were not clean. In addition to the cigarette burn holes, the sheets had some sort of gritty black stuff scattered on them. The floor was so dirty that my feet actually turned black from walking across them barefoot. The bathroom shower worked but it had no showerhead on it, so the water came out as a full-forced blast straight out of the pipe. Even the telephones in the rooms did not work! The swimming pool looked like it had not been cleaned for weeks - it had lots of debris (natural and human) floating in it. Plus the pool is only 3 feet deep so even if it had been clean there wouldn't be much incentive to go swimming in it.

At least the air conditioning in our room worked, and at least the refrigerator seemed clean. However, the only real positive thing about this motel is that the current managers are very friendly and talkative. Too bad their reception area stank of cigarette smoke.

Unfortunately, there aren't too many alternatives for a low cost place to stay in Big Pine Key. At least this place is easy to find, it's right on the highway. Maybe the rooms were so filthy because they were short staffed? I would advise you to check out the Bahia Honda cabins/campsites or "Ed and Ellen's" (both are low cost) before you settle for this place. In case you have no choice but to stay at this motel, here's a helpful tip - the t.v. remote is part of the alarm clock. Knowing that will save you a lot of frustration if you plan on watching t.v. (especially since they don't tell you at check-in and you can't call the office since the phones don't work).
