“Don't waste your time or money”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

New owners don't make a changed lousy restaurant and bar. Nothing has changed except the new wall. The place is boring, as they have removed the pool tables, and the onlt "entertainment" is a few tvs in the bar where seating is very limited. The bartender is anything but friendly; you would think she was doing you a favor taking your drink order. The food is overpriced and there is no happy hour food discounts. The only discounted item at HH is the house wine, domestic drafts and well drinks - no food. The lowest priced appetizer on their menu where the crappy nachos we sampled, the rest are $10+. If you want to drop some cash on subpar food, lousy atmosphere and be bored, stop here. These locals won't be back.

“Don't waste your money”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

Staying at Bahia Honda, we thought this looked like a cheery spot to have a quick dinner. By far, the worse food we had during our trip to the Keys. No one greeted or seated us. We chose to sit outside as the inside was a little stuffy on a Sunday afternoon. The menu offered an interesting variety. The conch fritters were the dreaded ones locals warn you to avoid. A ball of bread (I am assuming the same batter used for the beignets) with hard chewy bits that I guess represent the conch. I opted for the Cobb Salad which was supposed to have locally harvested shrimp and lump crab meat. It basically was a giant bowl of wilted ice berg lettuce with a generous helping of peas, cheese, and eggs. I suppose the shredded white stuff was supposed to be the seafood. There was not an identifiable shrimp in the lot. I did appreciate the avocado. My man ordered the Ramrod Mahi. It literally arrived at the table with a cloud of flies following it. A small piece of fish that looked and tasted like it was overcooked on a dirty grill. The fish was topped with three sad shrimp drowning in a "cajun cream" sauce - basically an unfortunate colored and flavored gravy. The side of grilled asparagus was terribly overcooked but oddly hard to chew. It was kind of like tiny pieces of soggy green rope. The side of slaw never arrived but we quite frankly were afraid to ask for it. As we swatted the flies away and tried to be good sports, we noticed the table next to us politely accepting a box to take their food home. We laughed when they said the food was fine but they had eaten before they came. Right! We knew those to-go boxes were headed for the trash as soon as they were out of sight of the nice waitress. We weren't willing to even pretend to take food with us. After having spent $30 at El Siboney for a glorious meal the day before, it was hard to fork over $56 for these two meals and a couple of lemonades. Don't let the cheerful paint job fool you. If you are looking for an inexpensive but delicious meal that makes you feel like you are in the Keys, head on down the road to Key West or if you are going the other way wait for Robbie's or Lorelei's in Islamorada.

“If it ain't broke, don't fix it”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

We've been going to Springers since they first open, and were thrilled to have a new local place that served excellent food. I'd never had such good ribs, and everything we tried was really good. Until our last 3 trips in...we wanted to make sure it wasn't a fluke bad experience. The ribs, which were usually covered in sauce, were almost white; the shrimp cocktail, usually 10 shrimp, shrank to 6 overnight, the pot pies doubled in size, but the flavor was diminished by too much artificial seasoning, and we have heard from numerous people that their appetizers have come out after their dinners (I wouldn't even mention it if it hadn't happened to us as well)....I don't usually write reviews, but maybe someone from Springers will see this and fix things before it goes down hill rapidly...we did hear they got a new chef/cook, but seriously, Springer, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...and remember, a good restaurant isn't just about the bar...we have both felt ill the last 2 times we have eaten there....think that might be it for us

“Getting better every week”
Reviewed January 18, 2013

As with any new food and beverage venue there were a few bumps at first but they were addressed promptly and the food service and quality improves steadily. Especially good are the pizzas, Philly cheese au jus, Springer's Club sandwich and the large salads. Locally caught fish sandwiches, chicken, homemade pot pies, Key West Pink shrimp and ribs are also on the menu and quite good. Those familiar with the Beignets (ben-yays) from Cafe du Monde in New Orleans will find them just as good at Springer's and served with a trio of raspberry, Jack Daniel's cream and chocolate dipping sauces. Now offering prime rib on Sunday and Wednesday nights and prime rib subs on Monday and Thursday.. It's not fine dining and doesn't intend to be. Just a good, local restaurant/bar with generous food portions, good quality top shelf drinks and a local friendly staff that also welcomes the tourists and are happy to share information for sightseeing from Big Pine to Key West. Springer himself is usually in attendance and stops by to say "Hi" and check on your table. If you're snooty, stuck-up, snotty, nit-picky or just rude and nasty go elsewhere. But if you are looking for some fun, relaxation, good food and drinks, a friendly bar staff and want to watch the big game, a NASCAR race or golf on a weekend this is the place to be on Big Pine. They also have a family dining room with plenty of seating for a group or a couple and more TVs. Did I mention squeaky clean? (And no, I'm not associated with the owners or management in any way. Just a Big Pine resident that welcomes a good alternative venue for my leisure time.)
