My wife really enjoys looking for the Key Deer. I think that if you are in the area and have some time it would be interesting to check this area out. If pressed for time, keeping moving. These tiny deer are around 3-4 feet tall. We had the most success locating them on No Name Key around an hour or so before dark. BEWARE of the NO-SEE-UMs. These nasty little bugs almost ate my wife alive. In the mangrove areas that predominate ion Big Pine and No Name Key there are loads of no-see-ums. If you don't know about no-see-ums, ask. It also may be helpful to stop at the Key Deer Refuge Center located at the Big PIne Mall for a map and directions

This is a great place, a preserve set aside for native species such as protected Key Deer. We also see native ringneck, black, corn, and salt marsh snakes, green anoles, leopard frogs, and mud turtles. Unfortunately, the Keys are now overrun with nonnative green iguanas, and black spiny-tailed iguanas on Big Pine and No Name Key, because of careless and irresponsible pet owners. Please get rid of these unsightly creatures, and fine the people responsible for this tragic act. Visit the Blue Hole and you'll see what we're talking about.

As was suggested, we drove down Key Deer Road to see Key deer. Finally, on our way back down the road, we saw two. One looked like a baby and then a larger one came out of the woods. The taller one couldn't be more than 4' tall. They stood next to and in the road eating grass and weeds. They aren't scared of the cars or people who got out of their cars, so you can stay and look at them as long as you want. Very cute little deer.

First of all, try to find the visitor center (it's tucked in a strip mall, hard to find). They can give you ideas of where to park and wait for deer or other areas to go to look for wildlife. Basically, though, you just drive around looking for deer. I ended up seeing three so it was totally worth it. A nice stop if you have some time to just drive around and look for deer.

My husband and I drove though Deer Key, not realizing that the entire key was the refuge; we tried to hunt down for a specific park, but had to return to the visitor's center, only to learn that the deer are scattered around and there's no specific place to look for them. They did try to recommend some areas where they were known to forage, but no luck whatsoever - the best opportunities we had were just random opportunities while driving by. So don't spend too much time hunting for deer here; if anything, go to the visitor's center and go where they recommend.
