Stopped here on the way down to key west. Long ride off of route 1. Waste of time. The refuge is in the middle of residential and commercial development. Very little to see. Skip it and keep driving.

A deer tottered across the road in front of us and grazed on the shoulder for a while, so we got to take photos. If you didn't see a deer, I'm sure you'd be disappointed. Go near dawn or dusk for your best chance, but we saw ours at 11 a.m.

We were very impressed with the artifacts and knowledge contained in this storefront headquarters. The Ranger was hugely helpful on places to stop and see the deer and other roads to check, also noting what other wildlife we may encounter. With his map and new information we went to the blue hole area and walked the trails around the water. It was bright daylight and we didn't see any deer there, but saw two alligators basking in the reeds and on a rock. Beautiful foliage. The one deer we did see was on our drive down towards the lower keys behind the mesh fencing where they need to be. The deaths of these unique and endangered deer are down from last year but still a staggering 125 have been killed this year. A great place to influence young children of the value of all nature.

Key Deer are every where, they will come right up to you, but don't feed them...A great experience for children and adults

What a sight to see herds of these little Key Deer ! They roam freely on Big Pine Key - drive carefully so as not to miss seeing them/or to hit them. Especially fun for the kids - you can get fairly close and get a good look - a nice quiet experience! We always see plenty of them as we make our way to No Name Pizza/Pub!
