Lots of deer in this refuge. If you can't find any drive into the neighbourhood at the end of the road, they are thick there. They are not shy and will come close to you. Do not feed them, but honestly, you can pat them. And they are so pretty.

The Key Deer are exceptionally friendly thanks to years of being fed by humans. They will walk up to your car, lick your hand, let you pet them and hang around until you leave. Sounds great, but thanks to an intentional campaign to educate humans about the harm they are doing by feeding wild animals, fewer of them are out and about pining to be pet.

A fed deer is a dead deer. Don't do it! Just enjoy looking at these cute little guys.

Stopped by the refuge on my way through Big Pine Key. There is a visitor's center in strip mall right off of US 1 on the way North to the refuge. Only saw one deer that day, but it walked around my car and didn't seem too shy. Was able to get several pics. There are a couple of hiking trails and the Blue Hole. Saw two alligators, several smaller red-earred turtles and dragonflies at the hole. There is a binocular there that you can use for free to see across and up close. Fun little side trip, took about and hour total. Fun time, neat to see such a rare animal!

Our plan was to hike around the Watson Nature Trails and Blue Hole to spot some key deer. As another reviewer mentioned, the best time to find deer anywhere is at dusk or dawn. So we went right around sunset and hiked around the trails hoping to find a deer or two. The hike was very peaceful, but we did not see any deer... or much of anything else for that matter. We had much better luck driving around Key Deer Blvd and Kyle Blvd.

After about an hour of hiking and driving around, we found 3 key deer. Finding a key deer is just something you need to do when driving through the Keys.
