“Deer abound”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2012

My wife and I were in Big Pine key for four full days and each day we saw at least half a dozen deer. More do come out with the sunrise and sunset, so if you're looking for deer, come at those times of the day.

“worth a side trip off of rt 1”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2012

See the Key Deer before the developers and real estate agencies some how get the refuge opened up .
A stable herd of 300 on Big Pine Key. Take a right at the light on to, interesting enough, Key Deer Boulevard 30 mph ENFORCED stop at the Blue Hole on your left about 2 miles from rt 1 . the only fresh water pond in the keys ; birds, fish ,deer and resident alligator or 2. At the end of KDB the herd is usually well represented . Coming back at Watson blvd. make a left to the "T" left again follow around to the world famous " NO NAME PUB" .................You'll say thanks Bob GREAT GIG !!

“Side Streets Hold The Deer”

If you want to see the deer, turn off the highway onto some residential streets to find them grazing on lawns.

“Key Deer roaming all over.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2012

I am so grateful for this refuge. The Key Deer are very special endangered animals and seeing them brings delight to everyone. If you don't know much about the species do a little history research and you will see why these deer are almost magical. Just make sure to drive slow as the deer are much smaller than white tail deer and quickly dart or stand around in the streets. Take a drive to the end of Watson until you reach the end, and they usually hang out there. There is also a nice view of the water you walk out to.

It's unlawful to feed the deer as the signs will remind you - make sure to abide. Just give this area a try and don't be discouraged if you don't see many or any deer, there are less than 800 on the islands, but they do exist.

“Get the map from the center”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2011

Just off the main highway on Big Pine Key, follow the signs to the Refuge Visitor Center where you can pick up a map to the most likely places to see the key deer. We saw at least 8-10 of them in different locations, mostly in the areas indicated on the map, even though we were there midday.
