I spent a lot of time last winter planning our trip to FL and down to Key West. The pictures online were amazing and it lived up to the hype. We were in search of the clear turquoise water and we found it here. Only stopped by this time...but will spend a whole day next time!!!

This is a really good place to go swimming! You get either the Atlantic side or the Gulf. On the Gulf side, they have a swimming area marked off, so you don't have to worry about the currents. The water was warm and fun to play in. There are changing huts and places to wash off the sand. This is a great beach!

Snorkeling was great. I am quite certain I saw a crocodile. I asked the fish and wildlife person he said it was unlikely but not unheard of. I saw a video of a crocodile from two years ago on bahia honda.

The water here is very clear and really pleasant for swimming, the problem is there is sea grass everywhere and this is not acceptable. They can't control the sea grass in the water, but let's get serious the beach area needs to be cleaned. There is some a nonsense sign up that says they leave it on purpose, lazy perhaps ? There is absolutely no excuse to leave that amount of seagrass anywhere, it needs to be kept clean. No that plus a close to 10 dollar entrance fee, is a huge problem. If our charging this kind of money, at least keep the place clean and inviting. This is twice now we have visited and they haven't figured this out yet. Due to the unreasonable price, we would probably not return anytime soon. This place has real potential if someone would only see it.

Veeeery nice beach! There are lots of them when you take road no 1, but this one is special. Nice blue water, very gentle sand

We went to snorkle and took another visitors advice to try the Atlantic side. There was at least a 6' drop and how the park handled it was to put limestone rocks along the edge. With no signs or visible way to get down we attempted the rocks. My travel companion took a tumble and got scratched up. Needless to say we never got to snorkle.
HOWEVER I cannot say enough on the help we received from the park and concession building staff. We went into the concession shop thinking it was also a park office. The staff there called the rangers for us and helped in any way they could. The park ranger was concerned and considerate.

There was only one beach open which had sea grass a few feet into the water. There was not a great place to swim. Lots of sea grass along the Atlantic side, the person collecting money tells you there are beaches open.....but truly who wants to walk through sea grass to get to the ocean. Save your $4.50. My husband and I ended up just swimming at a pull off area by the bridges on rt1.

Sadly there is still a lot of hurricane debris that needs to be cleaned up on the Atlantic side. The gulf side was fine.

Bahia Honda is heaven on earth...from the war, turquoise water to the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets...you will never want to leave. The people are friendly...their are so many marvelous nearby restaraunts, many fishing charters....ANYTHING you could want to do or just relax on the beautiful beach.

Most of the state park is gone/closed down after the hurricane, however the visit was great anyway. Walked up to the old bridge and enjoyed the view over the key.
