“Awesome food and will definitely go back”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

We were in the keys for a wedding - stopped in the Big Pine restaurant to visit family & have dinner! We had the best Mahi dinner- big portions! The service was excellent. We already anticipated this because we stopped in last year-such great food. We always recommend the Big Pine restaurant to all our family & friends because of the excellent service, atmosphere & awesome food!!! Will not disappoint- go see for yourselves:).

“Good food good service”

Stopped by to get some breakfast on our way north from Key West. Food was great, service was good and quick. Nothing fancy, but for breakfast simple is better. Would come back.

“Won't Go Back”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

We live here in the Keys and have been meaning to try this popular roadside spot for quite some time so we dropped by for lunch. It's a cute little place - feels like an old time diner that has stood the test of time. We eat at some of the Keys' best restaurants six nights a week so we were looking forward to having some really good "down-home" cookin'. The luncheon meatloaf, for $10.95, was one very thin, dried-up slice that appeared to have been re-heated. Probably should have ordered it with gravy instead of ketchup because it was mediocre at best. Also ordered a beef burrito for $11.95 which was very large but came with no sides and was also very dry. We asked the waitress for some extra salsa to make the burrito more palatable but it didn't really help. When the check arrived, we noticed that they had charged us $3.00 extra for the small side of salsa that we had requested. When we questioned the extra charge, the Manager pointed out that the menu clearly stated that salsa was listed as a side plate for $3.00. We pointed out that they were already charging $11.95 for a Burrito that came with no sides and that the reason we had ordered some extra salsa was because it was so dry. The Manager finally offered to "split the difference" and just charge us $1.50. We declined her generous offer and paid the bill in full. Hard to believe that $1.50 was worth losing customer goodwill. Don't get us wrong - we spend tons of money eating out and always tip well - even when the food or service isn't up to par. Needless to say, spending $45 for this caliber of lunch (including two domestic beers, soda and tip) for this place just wasn't worth it for us. Granted, Big Pine Key does not have many restaurants to choose from so that may account for this restaurant's popularity. Go figure....

Dear Ladies,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments.
We always appreciate our guests comments.

My goal today is to solve the problem, and ask you to reconsider your position, as it relates to not coming back.

That being said, after reading your comments, I am not sure if we were having a bad day, or if you were.

We are certificate of excellence holders. We are quite surprised with your level of dissatisfaction. Not only by your comments about our food but also the price. You may not be aware of the fact that in the restaurant business, we are subject to price changes weekly. In the past three weeks, on some items, we had a 35% increase. That is just one line item we have to manage.

We will take your comments about our food at face value. Even though we receive many great reviews on the particular items you chose to order.

I want to focus on three other things as well.
#1. Your comment about no other places to eat in Big Pine. Currently, there are 20.
#2. Your comment about standing the test of time.
#3. Extra charge for extra food.

With regards to number one. There truly that many open restaurants.

Pursuant to number two. You are correct. We have stood the test of time. There have been at least twelve restaurants that have opened and subsequently closed in the past 14 years that we have been here.

Standing the test of time required me working 16 hour days, every day we are open. Standing shoulder to shoulder with our staff. Standing the test of time does not come easy, nor does it happen by accident.

With regards to charging a bit more,
let us look at the following example.

Suppose you went to a service station, and purchased 15 gallons of gasoline. Then, just before you were about to leave, you decided to get justa bit more. So you put one more gallon. Do you really think the service attendants, management or owner would give the extra gallon to you for no charge? Would you even ask for a gallon for free? If no, why not? It's only a little bit more correct?

The point here is they sell gasoline for a living. We sell food for a living. If we gave away our food, even just a little bit, each time a guest asked for it, we would be gone. We simply cannot afford it. The salsa you asked for is made in house every day. It 100% fresh. It takes labor to make that happen. I could go on and tell you the many other line items of expenses wr have, but I will save you the trouble.

As this response started out, we told you we wanted to solve the problem.

Ladies, please know we always try to hit a home run every time. On some occasions, such as yours, we somehow missed the mark. It doesn't happen often.

To rectify the situation, we want to offer you lunch for two. No strings attached. No expiration date. We just want another swing of the bat. We are willing to spend the money necessary to fix the problem, and perhaps win back the opportunity to serve you in the future.

Thank you in advance for taking us up on our offer. We are here to serve you. It's our passion to serve you. It's our passion to stand the test of time.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Best regards always,

Big Pine Restaurant

Stopped in for breakfast on the way to Key West. Good food and great service. The entire party cleaned their plates. We plan on stopping in again on the next trip through. If if we only drive down from Marathon for breakfast.

“Large great salads and friendly service”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

The salads were very large enough for two meals. My chicken salad wrap was wonderful and had a slight curry flavor. The Ice Tea was great not "tinny" Have a good variety for meals and I believe serves beer at least. Seating is close but not bothersome for diners.
