I don't know what I was expecting. The trail was once a loop around the hole but only goes half way now. There is an observation platform where you can look out over the hole and there were two alligators within 1 foot of the platform. Don't fall in. 99.9% chance they have been fed by stupid humans and now sit there and expect food from stupid humans. We did see 10 species of birds in our short walk. Pied-billed Grebe, Cardinal, Red-bellied Woodpecker and others. It's worth stopping if you are in the refuge but don't go out of your way.
