Old Wooden Bridge Fishing Camp
Reviewed February 26, 2013

We stayed here on a recent trip to Miami and the Keys - did 2 nights in South Beach and continued on from Big Pine Key to Key West afterwards. This was the budget portion of our trip where we wanted to find a slightly less expensive place to stay so we could partake in some of the outdoor activities in Big Pine Key.

We stayed in #2. In general it was exactly what we expected. It sort of feels like an old beach house - dark wood paneling on the inside, but with a cable tv (I was pleasantly surprised by that!), mini fridge, microwave, and bathroom. The bathroom was not incredibly clean, though I suspect that's just age and not actual dirt! The location was perfect - a WALK to No Name Pub which we loved cause it meant we could have an extra beer or two with the delicious pizza. And the Key Deer outside our door each morning were so beautiful to see (though many of the guests were feeding them, which you're not supposed to do!) I should mention that while it was a quiet place to stay during our visit, no one was staying in the unit that attached to ours, so I suspect it probably would have been a much different experience had people been in that unit. We'd likely have been able to hear things through the walls since the wall is shared.

All that being said, while we weren't expecting a 4 star hotel, we forgot that a lower budget place also means lower budget mattresses. And this was probably one of the worst mattresses we've ever slept on in our lives. So much so that it really effected our sleep. Because of that, I probably wouldn't stay here again. I think it's fine for tired fishermen but for anyone who cares about their sleep, I'd look elsewhere.

I have three young kids and they all had a great time at the OWB. We have been there several times and plan to go back again. This is a great value for the money. I believe it was only $10 to dock our boat. We brought our own sheets and bedding, as their is not the best.

Room Tip: I would recommend the large cabin if you have 4 or more people.

If you're looking for somewhere quiet, clean, and right on the water this is a great place to stay. We were on a family trip so we were incredibly happy that it was family friendly and not loud and crazy. With that being said the rooms definitely need some updating. We stayed in #1 and it had a constant smell of propane gas no matter how many windows we had open. They definitely need new beds and a new a/c put in. We expected it to be hot during the day, but sleeping was almost unbearable especially on those mattresses. We weren't expecting a 5 star hotel mattress, but these were so uncomfortable and outdated. They are also wrapped in some kind of plastic which made a ton of noise anytime someone moved. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly and we had a great time on the kayaks we rented. If they got updated the a/c and mattresses this would have been a 5 star review.

This is my 3rd trip back to OWB. The staff is so nice to everybody. It was the husband's first time there and he is ready to go back again. The unit we stayed at was B and clean, the kitchen was quaint, beds were cozy, bathroom roomy. Our little Corgi learned to go up and down the stairs on her second day there. The other two times I went with my sister and we stayed in #8. Two bedrooms with a futon in the living room. Nice and cozy, the second time was cleaner than the first, but we didn't care. Just redo what you don't like and go forward. I was after the seculsion and quiet and that's what we found. Yeah, I'll be back again. Just to see the little Key Deer at the front door is worth it.

We had a great stay at the Old Wooden Bridge. This place is not fancy which is fine with us. We wanted a relaxing stay at a quiet place and that is what we got. Cabins could stand some fresh paint and new fixtures (and Matresses), but all in all this is a nice quaint old Florida style cottages. The No Name pub is always fun and only a short walk away.

We had a lovely 2 weeks at Old Wooden Bridge. It is a quirky place but comfortable and clean. We were able to do exactly what we wanted ie. stay at a relaxing place from where we could explore The Keys. We hired kayaks for the duration and also explored the surrounding waters meeting small sharks, rays and many small fish. The bird life was good to see also. The protected white tail deer come right up to the rooms and add to the quirkiness of the whole place. The small swimming pool for guests was very welcome in the warm late afternoons. We loved it.

Room Tip: Rooms are all individual wooden cabins of different sizes and have kitchenettes, bathrooms and ever...

This place is not fancy but unit B upstairs was clean and cozy. We enjoyed the location very much---close to No Name Pub, the bridge that goes to No Name Key where there were a ton of the Key Deer, and from the deck we caught a beautiful sunrise. The place seemed freshly painted and it did not have any fish odors as described by other guests. The only downsides we had were the mattresses have plastic covers on them and the sheets were made of polyester ( never a wise choice) and the wifi did not work except in the office building (probably a good thing because we really got to enjoy our 3 days off grid in nature!). We were particularly pleased that we could walk a lot, could bring our dogs and we got a military discount because my two nephews are in military. We would stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in unit B upstairs with balcony deck instead of in a separate cottage.
