“the best camping in florida.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2010

My boyfriend and I spent several days camping in site number 62 and we throughly enjoyed ourselves. Our site did not have a water view, but it was completely shaded over which was nice in August, of course. Our site was clean and the restrooms were as well. (Be aware that the restrooms are not equipped with water toilets, but composting toilets for the preservation of the park and conservation of water).

The major con: the beach directly in front of our campsite was positively covered with trash. We spent the majority of one of our afternoons collecting trash becuase it was awful to see such a lovely place so littered. Granted, this was during storm season and perhaps some of it just washed up recently, but we were disappointed. Another con: seaweed stink, but that's just nature. We had no problems with bugs and the heat wasn't intolerable (but we are Florida natives).

Pros: Nice snorkeling, great family environment, easy access to drug stores, restaurants, snacks, tours and rentals. Our site had water and power access. Easy access to 'secret' snorkeling spots that are indeed breathtaking. Friendly locals, lots of wildlife (including island iguana) and foliage.

My brother and I spent 4 nights tent camping at a site near Sandspur. The site was in great shape, spacious and clean. Shower and bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. All of the staff we dealt with were so friendly and helpful. Big thanks to the volunteers we saw working around the park. The concession at the marina was reasonably priced and offers decent food. We rented kayaks and had a blast riding the waves.
We had the ocean at our doorstep. Sea birds of different types flew by every morning and evening. The sun rises and sets were awesome. There was a little bit of smell sometimes from the sea grass on the beaches but we recognize it's a vital part of the local environment and really we didn't mind it at all.
Apart from enjoying the park this is also a great base for exploring the Keys. Bahia Honda is a very special place. Highly recommend it.

In early July 2009, we camped in Sandspur site 65 - while it wasn't right on the water, only the little campground road and sand dune was between us. It was a beautiful tropical site kept private from with lush vegetation.

Check-in took a while - we stood in line in a room with one ceiling fan for nearly a half hour. It was a popular day at Bahia Honda, they were turning away people at the gate because it was full. We did find, as the previous review sited, that the staff was very relaxed when it came to enforcing the rules, which was disappointing. For example, people were hanging hammocks off of trees, bringing beer cans in the ocean, or had 2 or 3 cars at sites so it was difficult to drive through the grounds at times. That was a little disappointing to see.

Other that that, it was wonderful to see the efforts to protect the park while keeping it accessible for people - the bathrooms were a little gritty, but made great efforts to be sustainable.

I was concerned that the natural beach might be a little icky too, but it was fine! The soft sand was amazing and the clear waters unbelievable. We'd camp here again for sure, but probably not in the middle of summer. The heat and sun was oppressive, to no great surprise. Of course, tent camping and warm waters offered little relief. We'll be back, but probably not in the shoulder season :)

Key West made a great day trip from here. Grocery shopping was also not far, just south a few miles. Worth making reservations MONTHS in advance!

The ocean is always wonderful at this park but the quality of other campers and
park staff would make it harder for me to camp there again. Number of park staff
was less from the year prior and staff working were not wanting to work or
enforce campground rules. Number of volunteers were also down.

I love the Florida Keys, and Bahia Honda too!!! We stayed at Bahia Honda on two different trips. The first time we camped. The main bath house is pretty nice, and there was a smaller bathroom with in walking distance. It was so cool to camp right by the beautiful water (we stayed by the lagoon), and we saw crabs and fish , really cool birds, and even a racoon. On the downside, it was very windy, and also had that funny odor. But to be at Bahia Honda, I'd put up with a lot!
We were lucky enough to get into the cabins during our second stay. The cabins are pretty simple, but definately perfect. The entire living area is on the second floor, and the parking is underneath the cabin, on the ground level. So you have to go up stairs to get to the cabin. From the upper deck we could see sea turtles swimming in the lagoon! There is a lower deck that is right on the lagoon, with a grill. The furnishings inside are very simple and plain, but who is spending much time inside when you are in the Keys?? It was GREAT, and I'd love to get back there, but they book up really far in advance!

What a great campsite in the florida keys, about 30 minutes from key west. The park is very clean with great beaches for swimming. I highly recommend the sandspur camping areas for those with tents. The spaces come with water and electricity and some sites have trees providing shade.

A beautiful state park. We stayed at the Sandspur Campground, # 62, listening to the waves crash in all night long. The higher numbers there will be closer to the beach, but anything along the beach will be wonderful.
The only thing that was lacking was coolness-very hot in August in Florida. But we knew that going in.
