Stayed in the bay side campsites on the west side of the Key. The bay is quiet and there are just a few campsites there so it doesn't get crowded. Neighbors were really nice. There was no electricity at the time in those sites, maybe they have it now.
The sites have the standard picnic table and grill and are just across the street from the water although you cannot swim there. For swimming just go to the beach by the bridge for a super calm and relaxing time or go to the east side for the Oceanic beach. Both have clear blue water and white sands. The park has many facilities and amenities. The concession stand is well stocked with essentials and nicknacks. Plenty of ice available in bags, essential when camping in the summer.
Overall a great family trip and you can't beat the price to stay in the beautiful Florida state parks.

Room Tip: Try to get the east side camping sites, by the oceanic beach, they are secluded and right next to th...

if you have a dream of beautiful tropical beaches travel to Bahia Honda State park and stay in one of their roomy/clean cabins. we will definately be back asap and hopefully for a longer period. we wanted to stay several days but could only get one night (and we booked 7 months in advance) the cabin areas are so quiet you will just melt into the beauty of this park, the cabins are located on the "borrow" which is a fairly deep water area that teams with tarpon and sea turtles. the fishing appeared good as we saw folks catching/releasing in regular fashion. the short trip to the famous beaches takes no more than 3 minutes by car and 10 to walk, and you will be glad you did, impossible to describe the colors of the waters as there are so many different ones. bring your family stay and enjoy

Room Tip: they are all good

We loved this campground although the nights in the tent were so hot! I would recommend bringing a portable fan. We stayed in sites 49 and 66 in the sandspur loop, which is by far the better camping area. Site 66 has direct beach access but no shade. The beach was just a short walk away from site 49. Sites 50+ had more shade than 49. Bathrooms were very clean and had hot showers.

I've tent camped at Bahia Honda several times. The last camp site I had was directly on the ocean. Its hard to describe just how cool it is to sit in a folding camp chair with one's feet propped up, sipping a beverage, talking about the day's scuba dives and activities with a buddy while watching the ocean waves lap on the beach as the sun sets over your right shoulder and behind you. Once the sun sets, the number of stars that can be seen is astounding; like being on top of a mountain. this place really is a small slice of paradise.

Marathon is only 7 miles away and there are some great places to get breakfast or dinner.

Anyone who has traveled in the Keys will know that you are never very far from US 1 and the highway noise. When I tent camp in the Keys, I always bring ear plugs and have always gotten a good night sleep. My main recommendation in Bahia Honda would be that tent campers should stay on the tent-only camp sites. They tend to be a little less noisy since tent campers usually don't have TV's blaring. Some of the tent camp sites do have outlets and you can plug in a small fan if you are camping in one of the hotter months of the year. Again: this is a beautiful and ideal place to camp for a couple of days.

We stayed for 3 days in March 2010. Park has beautiful beaches and great access for boating, fishing etc. Bathrooms are clean and nice. My warnings go to tent campers in the RV/Tent Camp area near the bridge. The highway bridge noise is loud at night and with a quick sudden rain, our site flooded horribly in the middle of the night with 3 inches of standing water. soaking all of our bedding and leaving us to sleep in our vehicle. I specifically asked if Site 28 was one that was prone to flooding when we checked in and I was told it was not. IT DOES FLOOD! Otherwise great family park. Bring bikes if you can. Quiet other than road noise at night.

We stayed at the Bayside Campground in early December. The park is really a gem among the treasures of the Florida Keys. The park is a great base for more explorations to Key West and the Lower Keys. Unfortunately our stay was shortened due to unexpected illness, but here are our impressions. The campsite we had was lovely with a waterfront view and had a picnic table, charcoal grill, and water shared with the adjacent site. We tent camp and the hard coral limestone soil was difficult to stake our tent in (bring a mallet and heavy duty stakes). The site was surrounded on three sides by mangrove trees which made it pretty private however the woods behind the site would be innundated with baywater depending on the tide. When the tide was out the mudflats it left could be smelly and I could see that mosquitos and bugs could be a problem in warmer weather. We stayed during an unusually cold spell, so we didn't see any bugs. The park has amazing scenery with nice beaches and abundant wildlife. The park staff were very friendly and informed. They granted me a refund on two days that we were not able to stay and were very cordial in helping us out with our situation. We wish we could have gone on one of the snorkeling excursions and plan to do so next time we visit. When we do return I will try to book a beachfront campsite in the Sandspur Campground, which per our inspection proved to be the nicest for our tastes. If you plan on bicycling on the island bring your own as they do not have rentals on-site. We are very grateful to the friendly and helpful park staff and look forward to exploring the park more fully next time.
