The mansion was fascinating and our guide made it come alive. Her knowledge and ability to answer non-scripted questions about the family and mansion was very impressive. The A. I. Dupont story is amazing on its own, but they have done a wonderful job making you feel like you actually know the man. The gardens and house are wonderfully maintained and the groups are small on the tours. (4-6 people) Make reservations! There are limited tickets available each day so buy in advance online. We did and they were waiting for us when we arrived.

We visited last week with family from out of town and we all enjoyed the tour of the home. Almost all of the first two stories are open to the public...more than I expected. I enjoyed hearing a bit of the history of the house and the family. Some of the features are quite impressive when you consider when it was built. The tour lasts about 2 hours. Leave another 30 mins if you want to tour the gardens on foot. We sadly didn't allow time for that.

Poor Alfred Dupont! He wanted so to impress his second wife, who apparently loved all things French more than she did him, that he built Nemours-- a palatial home and garden not far from Winterthur in the Brandywine River valley. The home has many attractive features, particularly some of the gadgets that Alfred had installed. The furnishings are functional but nothing special. The garden is quite amazing in its audacity. The tour groups are small and you can walk in the garden unaccompanied. Best is to book a house tour and do the gardens on your own. Plan for about a 2 hour visit. One leaves with the feeling that Alfred put his dollars into Nemours, but that his true love was the chemical factory. Money can't buy you love, but it sure can buy you a big house.

The home is beautiful, with lovely furnishings. Tour lasts over an hour and is well worth it. There's even a bowling alley in the basement. The gardens are beautiful. Reminds one of a mini Versailles. Definately worth the trip.
