My family and I stopped by 1776 for lunch to avoid the chain restaurants we can visit anywhere. This restaurant has an intimate atmosphere with fascinating colonial era prints and actual artifacts. Each of us ordered the Lobster and Seafood Bisque which was rich and flavorful. We also enjoyed seafood dishes such as shrimp salad and steamed little neck clams (cherrystone) in a rich garlic and buttery broth. Servers were attentive and efficient. Great place for lunch.

Where to start with all the things that were not done right? In no particular order:
The mini room for our group was very undersized and 1776 knew how many people to expect. No changes were allowed without getting a hard time for the limited choices picked by the group leader. The selections included 2 soups, both of which were creamy. The hamburger was overcooked. No condiments were on the table, such as ketchup & mustard. When asked for, waitress said she would bring them after everybody was served. So choice was eat bare or cold hamburger. It took 30 minutes to receive food so there was time to bring condiments to table earlier. Rolls were served about 10 minutes after meals. Floors going from one room to others are uneven, with dark carpeting and no warning size. This is a health hazard, IMO.

The one highlight was very good chocolate cake for desert.Never again! There are so many great restaurants in the area. I don't know how they've stayed in business.

The filet mignon was fantastic and served with Beranaise Sauce that is prepared perfectly. The crabcakes were not good at all as they were mostly fillers. Great place for their steaks though. Prices were very high but the atmosphere is good. They have a bar that was filled with locals that did not seem to enjoy visitors we saw there - but if it's steak you are looking for, eat in the dining room and enjoy!

It actually felt like a nice restaurant serving steaks, etc. but not like a "steakhouse" where portions are larger and the food presentation is much nicer. Atmosphere is warm and comfortable. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. Service was very good, once our "not so good server" was replaced.

I'm new to the area, a widow. Looking for social contact and making friends. I mentioned this to the maître dee and he directed me to the bar. If you're not a regular and if you're not in the clique, don't bother. Unfriendly.
