“Nice historic setting and the food did not disappoint”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

We went there with friends and enjoyed several of their signature libations. I started with a concoction of ginger, rum and ginger beer it was very good but I switched to a local clone of Guinness stout that was excellent. We ordered a Charcuterie plate that had cheeses, cold meats, condiments and toasted breads for four. That was $16.99 and we were all very happy with it. We ate and talked before dinner.

I had a brisket sandwich on grilled thick sliced bread with melted cheddar cheese and BBQ sauce. It was tasty, plentiful and tender. My wife and our friends had had the fish and chips and were very happy. The menu has brick oven pizza, bay seafood and some historically inspired dishes. Service was good. If you intend to linger get a booth, the backless stools at some tables don’t encourage long occupancy.

“Happy New Year!”

We had a great dinner followed by a champagne toast. The meatloaf is fabulous. The burgers are always tasty. Don't skip dessert, it is always home made and delicious!

“Great Tavern in an Historic Town”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

Driving through Odessa, Delaware, is such a treat. The historic buildings are well-kept and beautiful as is Cantwell's Tavern which was built in 1822. It's very nicely appointed inside and has several small dining rooms down- and upstairs. It was our second time here and we were seated in a booth near a fireplace which was quite cozy. They have great tavern food and some offerings for vegetarians/vegans. The beer- and wine menu is extensive, and there were also specials offered. Everything is a la carte, so we shared salads and appetizers. The waiter graciously gave us sharing plates for the salad. We had the fried pepperjack bites with peach jam--they were quite tasty without a fried taste. The raw oysters were quite fresh, and the BBQ & Bleu Cheese Baked Oysters were flavorful. The oyster po' boy came with ketchup instead of the typical remoulade sauce: a disappointment. The Vegetarian Tapas were a plateful of roasted vegetables: yummy! The chicken and biscuits is a very small offering but good-tasting. The grilled salmon was cooked to perfection on a bed of pureed sweet potatoes: the brussel sprouts were bitter (normally roasted brussels are sweet). The pear tart was the perfect ending to a good meal: was that a shortbread crust? The ambience is great and the food is too, so why not make Cantwell's Tavern a stop if you're in the area?

“Great local spot!”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

Tavern with a ton of different beers available. They have a small but good menu selection. Typical tavern food but a little more upscale. Food is a little pricy and once you start trying some beers out the bill can add up quick. The staff was friendly and helpful and had a great knowledge of the beers available.
