Owner description: The Amstel House is the first mansion in Delaware and was home to an early Governor. Originally known as "The Corner," this was the most important home in the late 1700s. High society came to this house, including George Washington, who attended a wedding here.

Visited the house last evening for the Halloween tour. Lovely place with very knowledgeable staff. Can't wait to go back in the day time.

A lovely old place. They have ramps, but you can see that originally each addition ended up with a different floor level. The kitchen fireplace in the back looks like it was used extensively.

This small home is a quaint look at colonial America. Washington attended a wedding here. This house can be visited with the Old Dutch house on the same tour for a little history of New Castle.

A nice slice of affluent life in New Castle this house shows the dwelling of a well- to-do attorney and is the largest house of its era in New Castle still standing. Good albeit short tour was well done and personalized. Do the tour of the Dutch House at the same time which contrasts rich and ordinary

You will need to knock on the door of the house to purchase your ticket for the tour; I suggest you buy the combo ticket that would afterwards include the Old Dutch House. While waiting for your tour to start, go back outside and check out the garden with the butterfly shaped garden, rear oven beehive and gardening shed building.
A doctor had this house built to rent to wealthy business people and politicians. Very nice antique furnishings. They are still working on repairs in some of the rooms. Our guide was nice and very informed, but was also very long winded. We were actually glad when the tour was over even tho we liked the house, the history and the rooms. George Washington was at a wedding in this building so that is always fun to tread the same floors as our first President. There is a small gift shop inside but no restrooms. No indoor photo taking allowed. There are portable seats available to take with you from room to room if you need to sit down.
