Owner description: The Amstel House is the first mansion in Delaware and was home to an early Governor. Originally known as "The Corner," this was the most important home in the late 1700s. High society came to this house, including George Washington, who attended a wedding here.

You will need to knock on the door of the house to purchase your ticket for the tour; I suggest you buy the combo ticket that would afterwards include the Old Dutch House. While waiting for your tour to start, go back outside and check out the garden with the butterfly shaped garden, rear oven beehive and gardening shed building.
A doctor had this house built to rent to wealthy business people and politicians. Very nice antique furnishings. They are still working on repairs in some of the rooms. Our guide was nice and very informed, but was also very long winded. We were actually glad when the tour was over even tho we liked the house, the history and the rooms. George Washington was at a wedding in this building so that is always fun to tread the same floors as our first President. There is a small gift shop inside but no restrooms. No indoor photo taking allowed. There are portable seats available to take with you from room to room if you need to sit down.

I used to live right down the street from this beautiful building. Try to visit at the New Castle Day time and any other time.
Always good knowledgable guides! Great old kitchen in the rear and a small garden space. The history is wonderful with the real Geprge Washington connection.

We were fortunate to stumble across New Castle which researching Dutch settlements in the US during the 17th Century. The Amstel House is beautify early Georgian style Mansion meticulously apportioned and laid out and the docents/guides were very knowledgeable for the most part and incredibly friendly/helpful. Our tour guide was also instrumental at steering us towards Jessups Tavern for a bit of Colonial lunch in a historical building

My only complaint is that photography is not allowed inside the houses and of course, no photo and historical guides exist currently that document these two sites.
Nevertheless we had a blast visiting this site as well as the Old Dutch House and we walked away with some nice trinkets and reading material from the museum gift shoppe. This place is very highly recommended and affordable @ $9 per person for two house tours (need at least two hours for the tours and some time in the gift shoppe).
We will definitely return to finish checking out the Courthouse, The Old Library Museum as well as other historical houses available to tour.

When you visit New Castle, be sure to make the Amstel House one of your stops. My wife and I enjoy visiting historic places and usually learn new things at each place we visit. The Amstel House didn't disappoint. Our guide was wonderful and took the time to answer all our questions. A great visit!
