Since moving to Delaware a little over a year ago, we finally went to Prime Hook. It's a beautiful, peaceful place to be ...quiet...and if you love to see and watch birds this is the place to be. We love to watch the birds and all the varieties there are to see. If you want to get back to nature and enjoy what Delaware has to offer, visit Prime Hook.

This 8000 acre free national wildlife refuge is on the eastern coast of Delaware, northwest of Lewes. It has a small visitor center where you can pick up information, maps, trail maps, etc. There are a number of short trails to see a great variety of wildlife, especially birds. One behind the visitor center is a half mile trail with a boardwalk that goes over a part of the 4200 fresh water wetland. There canals for boating and fishing. It is 50 years old this year and is a true gem of a refuge

We went in the wet, hot summer and be warned there are many bugs, so carry some insect repellent with deet.

Knowledgeable rangers were very helpful. This is a beautiful location for birding--fishing and boating! If you are in the area, please go by for a visit. They celebrate 50 years of operation this year!

My fiance and I love to stop here and go for a hike after our yearly trip to Rehoboth Beach. It breaks up the trip on the way home, and gives us something to look forward to. We went on the Blue Goose and the Black Farm trail this year, which was much deeper in the woods then we have gone previously with the boardwalk and the loop trail. We were dressed for hiking, however we must have walked through a nest of ticks because I found 4 on me and 12 on my fiance. Make sure you pack bug spray! (Although if you forget they have some in their cute gift shop) We saw a beaver, a hawk, frogs, a deer, and a vulture on this trip. They also have a nice shaded spot for picnics!

My wife enjoys seeing the variety of migratory bird on the Alantic flyway during the fall and spring months. We stopped off at Prime Hook in early April and were amazed by not only the number of green-winged teal and northern shovelers but the dozens of egrets. The place is lovely any time of year but during the fall and spring it is the best.
