“Better than Ever !”

This is my favorite get away place in the world !
It is not your usual Bed & Breakfast , very updated and Key West . Easy walk to beach restaurants and fishing docks .
New Innkeeper Judith Davidson made this our best visit ever with her great breakfasts (free range eggs , yummy home fries , homemade waffles , bagels lox and cream cheese ) .
The rooms are beautiful , upscale bedding and towels and the house is so clean and comfortable.
I cannot wait to return !!!!

Just got back from a long weekend at Blue Water House and cannot say enough good things about it. The innkeeper, Judith Davidson, does a superb job keeping the place ship-shape. She whips up a yummy hot breakfast featuring homemade waffles with real maple syrup (or raspberry, pecan, or strawberry syrup if you're so inclined) and fresh eggs from free-range chickens off her brother's farm. It's the small details that make the difference: the citrus and olive oil-infused bath products and the heavenly-scented bath towels make you feel like you're staying at a spa. And the decor is smashing: each of the Caribbean-inspired rooms is unique and well-appointed and bears Judith's personal decorating touch. Guests can help themselves to beach umbrellas, chairs, and towels before strolling to the near-by public beach, and brand-new bicycles are also on hand for those interested in exploring Lewes and its environs, which includes Cape Henlopen State Park. A great getaway for grown-ups!

Just returned from a short, but sweet weekend away at the Blue Water House - it was exactly as we wanted and expected. If you are interested in a quiet, yet friendly atmosphere a bit off the beaten path - it's perfect. This was our second trip to Lewes, but first (and certainly not last) trip to the Blue Water House. The B&B is not a typical B&B - it's a sort of tropical meets funky art studio type of motif. Perfect for it's beachy surroundings and not at all stuffy, i.e., where you are afraid to break the fine antiques. Our room (and all the rooms we could see) were spacious enough for our stay. Tastefully decorated, not sparse, but not overstuffed - a very good balance. Bathrooms, although not large by any stretch, were perfectly accommodating and clean. The towels and toiletries were wonderful - soft and scrumptious. The bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed wine on the private porch off of our room (although the view wasn't exact as I had hoped, but....) The location is terrific too. Two blocks (not long) to the bay beach, quiet residential setting, but very close to the docks on the canal and several restaurants/bars for a late evening out for drinks. The town of Lewes is a short walk away as well. Bikes were available, although we did not avail ourselves of the opportunity. Breakfast was casual and unpretentious - exactly as we liked (and the muffins were wonderful). A short drive or bike ride and you can get to Cape Henelopen State park (great beaches).

We will definitely be back - maybe with some friends next time!

  • Liked — Fresh take on the B&B - more modern
  • Disliked — the one thing they can't change - it's not on the beach -BUT it's close!

We scheduled our "baby moon" here and stayed two nights in the Hemingway room. The room was tastefully decorated, large, with a spacious bathroom and a nice dressing room area. It was very private and quiet. The inn itself was quirky, but very fun without the stuffy Victorian B & B feel.

A major highlight was the breakfast. Saturday morning started with coffee delivered outside your door. We were then treated to a wonderful breakfast including omelets (made to order), waffles, parfaits, fresh baked goods, and fresh fruit (We ate it all). Fresh squeezed orange juice and an assortment of teas and coffee topped it off.

Sunday morning featured a picnic basket delivery of more wonderful treats. A fresh bagel, quiche, fruit, more parfaits, a mini cinnamon roll, OJ and champagne arrived outside our door in a wicker basket with all the tools.

The inn has outdoor areas, bikes, massage available, cable TV and wireless. It is a five minute walk to the beach (bay) and a five minute walk to town where many good restaurant choices await.

The innkeeper, described by some as unfriendly, is perfect. She is very good at what she does; she pays attention to your needs, and meets them without invading your privacy. She is a true professional in our opinion. If you want to sit down for a long chat, she may not be the one, but if you want to be discreetly well fed and housed, we would not hesitate to recommend The Blue Water House.

OK, if you go to B&Bs to make friends with the innkeeper, this is probably not your place.

But my husband and and I enjoyed two wonderful nights at the Blue Water House in the Hemingway Room. The entire inn is decorated with care and an artistic flair with an emphasis on bold Caribbean colors, which we found perfect for the beach atmosphere we were seeking. The Hemingway Room is a little oasis inside the inn - spacious, tastefully decorated, private, with a fabulous bed and bathroom. The breakfasts cooked by the inn's owner were just fantastic - beautifully presented, lots of variety, and very generous. And the thermos of hot coffee and newspaper placed outside the door each morning is a very welcome touch, as is the extensive information in the room's binder about local restaurants and activities.

We had high hopes when we found this place online, but were disappointed by the cool reception we received from the front desk person, who appeared to be the owner. We felt like and were treated like trouble, rather than the paying customers we were. We would not stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at this inn for one night in July, and had a totally different experience from other reviewers. We were "greeted" by a not exactly surly, but certainly indifferent, young man. Air conditioner in room was very loud. When I finally saw the owner the next morning, her attitude matched that of the young man's--even though I couldn't have been more pleasant, I was clearly given the impression that I was a bother. Breakfast was not good (eggs way undercooked). Room colors and scheme more in line with '60s hippy than for adults--or perhaps more like Key West. For $200+ a night, I certainly expected something a notch better. Virden House in Lewes is much, MUCH better.
