We spent one night at the Zwaanendael Inn on Second Street (the main street) in Lewes before we took the ferry over to Cape May. We rent a house for the month of April, but this was the first time of staying during the summer season. We were pleased that the town was quiet. We booked a small room and it was very small -space for one suitcase, but it was very pleasant for one night. This room did not have a television (a plus) and the whole hotel seems like a throwback to earlier times. Reminded us of hotels in Europe. Tiny evelvator. The room rate included a full breakfast. The hotel sits right across the street from King's ice cream, open till 11 pm and doing a great business. (I love their ice cream.) I had a chance to shop a bit before we met friends for dinner and enjoyed the August sales and no sales tax. Much more pleasant than the outlet malls. Lewes is a lovely town and we were very pleased with this hotel. Would not recommend it for children though.

Room was creaky, and a little on the small side, but we'd stay there again. Plenty of parking out back. Good hot breakfast. Right downtown, close to good (but expensive) restaurants. Recommend Irish Eyes or maybe Gilligans, others too foofy.

We stay at a lot of hotels on the National Registry and this one was average. We also rate all hotels/B&B's by two things: if the bed was comfortable and if the shower was decent. The bed was VERY comfortable but the shower was pretty lame. Hence, we probably won't got back. We figure if a hotel can't deliver these two basics, they just don't get another chance.

The room was comfortable and large. We had a sitting room in addition to our "bed" room. Our "suite" had two bathrooms (both with "pretty weak" showers.

But is was a comfortable stay. The elevator was small but fine. Breakfast was delicious and free. No problems there.

People were friendly and we enjoyed our stay.

Good luck!

First off, the rates, nightly cost for single occupancy! How many places still do that? We paid $145. and change per night and for what the room was worth, that was about $100.00 too much. We went with the mid-priced room and wondered if the room we had was that bad, what the cheapest room must have looked like! The room was very small (we are told that it was the European style) just enough room to get out of the bed on either side without hitting the wall. Our room had a sky light from the first floor right out side the window and as the fan in the downstairs room turned, it flashed light throughout our room all night. The old fashioned elevator was quaint, but not functional for getting in and out of with luggage. No character to the room at all, besides the asparagas fern that shed all over the floor! Very plain bathroom, not much room to place toiletries. And I believe the large fluffy towels they advertise lost the fluff a long time ago. The "breakfast" served in the downstairs Cafe' was sparse to say the least. The only advantage to staying here was it was a close walk to a couple of restaurants we like in the area. Otherwise, not a place we'll return to, or recommend to others. Not at all the experience that we awaited, especially based on the price! And, yes, we did make our dissatisfaction known to the staff and they showed no concern for our dissatisfaction!
