“A beautiful, intimate Inn”
Reviewed March 16, 2009

Recently assisted organizing and then attending a women's retreat at the Inn at Canal Square. The rooms were beautiful, the setting was ideal and the staff was amazing. The most accomodating and gracious staff! It was absolutely lovely. I would recommend the Inn for an initmate couples getaway, girls escape or meeting space for any type of function. Great restaurants are within walking distance within the quaint town of Lewes. 5 stars from me!!

We had a 2 nite stay at the Inn. Lewes is a really nice town, and the Inn is only 1 block off the main street. Friendly staff. Fresh flowers at reception. Convenient parking. Clean room with a view of the canal (Rm 301). Breakfast was included with the room. More of a boutique hotel than a B&B. We enjoyed our stay - only 2 negatives. The bath in our room was only the starkest white plaster walls, with the most basic of fixtures. We thought it a little expensive for what was provided. Great area to visit.

We stayed for one night over Columbus Day weekend - the rate was perhaps a little high but the AAA discount helped, and I had always wanted to stay here. Breakfast was included as well as free use of a guest computer for internet access.

We found the rooms clean, comfortable, and extremely quiet. Our bed and pillows were fine. I think that the rooms could use a little lighter look (the drab flower curtains need to go!) but I was thankful there was no tacky beach decor. The shower/bath area could definitely use some attention--softer lighting, maybe a washable throw carpet, and some kind of stand to place personal items. Like other guests, I agree that some bottled water, more toiletries, and maybe some slippers would be nice touches.

The inn is set back a bit from the water, but we had a very nice view of the water as we were in a corner room on the 3rd floor. Some rooms seem to have more of an obstructed view than others. The public areas are quite nice with beautiful artwork, tasteful decoration, and wonderful fresh lilies.

The breakfast was nice with some unique items and the breakfast room is very relaxing and pleasant. I liked that it was self-service. We would have welcomed a fresh fruit salad and cottage cheese, and I'd switch out the musak movie tunes out for some light jazz.

All in all we had a very nice stay at the inn. Being familiar with what Lewes is all about, and the inn's placement, we pretty much knew what to expect. I was happy to finally stay there and get one of the best night's sleeps in a hotel I've ever had...well, I was really tired from biking in Assateague...

I would definitely recommend. We stayed in a charming, harbor view room with very nice decor and a comfortable bed. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The package we chose included a massage which was wonderful and a $50.00 gift certificate to 2nd Street Grill. The restaurant was wonderful with great food and service.

Though a little pricy, I would definitely go back.

My daughter and I stayed at the Inn at Canal Square 9/16/07-9/18/07. We found the staff to be very congenial and helpful. The inn is somewhat overpriced, but you know that up front. It is very centrally located in Lewes, just a short walk to all the shops and restaurants. The room was large and tastefully decorated. It was a little dark for our taste, we prefer a more beach-like decor. Nevertheless, it was comfortable and clean. We had a great view of the harbor from our third floor balcony. The European breakfast was nice with plenty of fresh fruit, cereal, danish, etc. We had the "Fun in the Sun" package which included a very nice to-go lunch, a generous tube of sun block and a nice package of beach toys

We stayed here with the hopes of having a lovely view of the Harbor. what a joke. In front of our room was another building and to the right was a parking lot. If we leaned over the balcony and craned our necks, we could see the Harbor.
The rooms were like an upscale holiday inn-- not even a bottle of water in the fridge. Beds uncomfortable; pillows must have been 10 years old--be sure to bring your own if you stay there.
Thank goodness Lewes is a lovely town and we had great weather-- then we did not need to be in our $250. room to stare at the "harbor" view. ALways thought a harbor had water!

Try the Blue Water Inn-- really has what an INN is supposed to.

  • Liked — Outside of the building is quaint
  • Disliked — Misrepresentation of views and facilityis more like a fancy motel than a real inn

This particular guest made her reservation over our online reservation request program. At the time the guest made her reservation, we only had 1 queen room left due to availability. Also within her request form she never specified any special requests other then she wanted our "Harbor View" room. We classify our queen rooms as our "Harbor View" rooms and our king rooms as our "Harbormaster" rooms. We do not quote our rooms based on the view. The views from our rooms are contingent upon the floor that you are on. If a guest specifies that they would like a particular view we try our best to accommodate them. Our property is located on the canal in Lewes and the main building is set back only 50 feet from the water.
The complaint about our pillows and mattress is also unwarranted. Our mattresses are only 6 months old and of a high quality. The down pillows in our rooms are also only 6 months old.

I recently stayed at the Inn at Canal Square, and for a grand total of $255 per night (plus taxes) I received a boring, nondescript, holiday-inn express type room. The bed was uncomfortable (and felt like sleeping on a trampoline), the furniture dated, the decor blase, and the bathroom absolutely tiny. The only redeeming quality was the nice view of the canal.

Scandalously overpriced, in my opinion.

(P.S. "historic" lewes is essentially a motley collection of antique shops, a couple of decent restaurants, and other touristy-shops, i.e. a real tourist trap).
