This is the best beach on the east coast. The waves and sand are just right. The only negative is the tourists who come here.

Just beyond the Lewes/Cape May Ferry on the Delaware coast is a nature preserve and remains of a WWII gun emplacement called Fort Miles. During the summer season there is a nature center, biking and hiking trails among the beautiful dunes, ocean beach to explore, and the interesting remains of a fortification designed during World War II for protecting the Delaware Bay from possible enemy attack. Walk among the old barracks, read the informative signs, see the huge guns still in place, and climb to the top of an old military observation tower for a great view. A curious mingle of peaceful nature with war machinery, this is a significant nesting ground for various birds. There is a beach facility and during the summer a small restaurant. Costs $4 for in state residents and $8 for us visitors. Worth the fee! We received no maps or literature of any kind. Go online first before showing up to understand the lay of the land better.

The nature and scenery are breathtaking. A great place to take pictures and take a nice leasurely stroll along the water. We went for our first weekend to Lewes with family and got many fantastic pictures for our album.

$8/ day for out-of-state (allows you entrance into any state park that day)

Had difficulty finding where to park for the trailheads. Found the trailhead to the lovely Pinelands Trail completely by accident; from the main road you can't see the trailhead. Website is also not updated; the Nature Center was closed so was the Gordon Pond trail, but had to find this out the hard way. I asked at the main gate for other trails, the attendant suggested I park at the beach for another trail...which took me 20 minutes to find because there are two different beach parking lots and because the trailhead is marked only by a nondescript wood post. The trails were easy to follow once you can find the entrance, but still it was unusual not to see signs indicating that a trailhead was nearby. Also, I had to rely on my smartphone to see how long the trails would be -- strange that they would not give a general map or at least the trail distance at the trailhead. I just wanted to park my car and get a few good hikes in, and it was very difficult to figure out how to do this -- can't imagine navigating in the busy season.

Enjoyable day but why are they hiding the trails? Insider only park?? C'mon, put up some signs and roll out the welcome mat for visitors!

We rode our bikes through the park and it was flat and beautiful. The trees smelled wonderful and there were lots of places to park our bikes and walk to the ocean.
