Having read favorable reviews of the Dover Holiday Inn Express in tripadvisor, I booked our family of five in a suite at this hotel for a single night, en route to North Carolina. We checked in around 6:30 pm on a Friday evening. After unpacking our bags and freshening up, we planned to head out to dinner.

My youngest child needed to use the bathroom first. After an unusually long wait, she called to us that she couldn't open the bathroom door - when she turned the handle, nothing happened. My husband and I huddled around the door calling out suggestions - can you turn it to the right, can you turn it to the left, is there a button you can pull, etc. Nothing worked. So my husband and I stared at each and I suggested he head to the main desk and explain what happened.

It turned out that they were not at all surprised by the situation, and handed him a key to use to unlock the door from the outside. Once we unlocked the door and freed our child, I suggested to my husband that he go into the bathroom and try it himself; I would wait outside the door with the key. It turned out that when he locked the door, the handle was completely disengaged and could not be opened. So once again we used the key to unlock the door from the outside. After returning to the main desk, he asked them if the handle could be fixed. The reply: no, the maintenance man had gone home for the day. He then asked if there was another room we could have. The reply: all that was available was a smoking room; the hotel was full. He then asked to speak to the manager. The reply: he's gone home and won't be back until morning.

I went out to the main area looking for the 24X7 coffee (all gone, apparently), and then walked over to the main desk and told them I was very disappointed with the room. I did not raise my voice and I stayed calm. They did not, however, and yelled at me, which I found both strange and embarassing. Our situation was ridiculous - a room with a bathroom that requires a "buddy" with a key standing outside to let you out. They insisted that the door handle was not broken. I told them it was. They conceded that sometimes the screw becomes loose. I told them it was completely broken and suggested they take a look. They were unmoved. Again, I asked for the manager. I was told he was not there.

So I leave it to the readers of tripadvisor to decide if the policies and practices of this hotel are to your liking. The actual problem did not bother me as much as the attitude of the staff. Would I need to lay out a series of arguments to convince the readership that a bathroom door which locks the user inside is not safe, or would you immediately understand this? Would you want to help? As I lay in bed that night, I thought about how truly unsafe it was - the bathroom had no phone and no window . If you were locked in, and others were not around, how would you possibly escape, particularly under emergency cirumstances?

We spent $142 for the room, plus taxes. I expected much better service for this price.

I stayed at this hotel for three weeks while on business in the Dover area. The best part of the room was the bed. It had a pillow-top mattress which made it super comfortable. The room itself was fairly dark and they could provide another lamp or two to make it brighter. The free high speed internet access was nice. The hotel is pretty new and that shows in the lack of wear and tear on the facilities. The suite I was staying in had a jacuzzi tub and a small refrigerator and microwave. The free continental breakfast wasn't bad and included an assortment of cereal, muffins, and pastries as well as oatmeal, grits, cream of wheat, and hard boiled eggs. There was also coffee, tea, and hot cocoa available in the lobby 24 hours a day. The general manager was extremely willing to accomodate any requests. The housekeeper on my floor actually learned my schedule (I was working evening shift) and was careful to clean my room last so she would not wake me up. Overall, it was a very good experience.

This appears to be a newer hotel. I have been in several HI Express and this has to be the best one that I have been in (all things combined). Some notable things: a great bed (nice big pillowtop mattress), nice furniture, nice bathroom, and a high speed connection. Breakfast was good (standard HI express fare). The location is so, so at best but for an overnight stop, who cares? Along those lines, the room was quiet too.
