“Really three separate places”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

I've been here dozens of times the last several years. It's really three separate places with (at least) three different types of experiences: sometimes grumpy take out, pleasant family sit down dining, dead/fun bar scene. The pizza is pretty good. Not a huge garlic fan and this one is easier on the garlic than some 'authentic' Italian places. The cheese steaks are decent. Some in our group liked the seafood but I've never ventured that far from the standard pizza place stuff.

First the take out. I've only done this a couple times but it can be a little soup nazi-ish so have your order together before going in there or you could get a bit of an attitude. Not enough to scare me away but if having a beer is a possibility, I suggest you go order at the bar, get a beer and wait for your food there rather than at the take out counter.

For the dining room, it's usually not too packed, even on a busy weekend when other places have 45 min waits. We had a group of 8 including young kids and it was perfect. Served promptly, no wait, decent food for the kids and not wildly expensive.

Finally the bar. I like this bar but it's kind of random as to whether you are going to have a blast or it's going to be completely dead. Most of the time, it's dead. It's kind of small so it's a little like you are in your parent's basement with a stereo (jukebox), couple TVs and a dart board (one of the few places left with real darts). If there are people in the bar, it can be pretty interactive and fun....maybe because it's small or maybe it's because it attracts gregarious people who have stumbled on it over the years. When it's on, it one of my favorite places to have a beer in Dewey.

“Wonderful flavors!!”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

There were four of us, and we all loved it here! Mine was the scallops (with pasta), and there were four big ones. Service was great, too!

“Top quality everyday italian food”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

Stick to basic everyday dishes at Mama Maria's. Their tomato based sauces remind me of my mother's. Rich, fresh tomato flavor. Not the typical overcooked, over salted, super garlicky flavor that is common but is better for topping a pizza than a plate of pasta. Their entrees are served with a starter salad topped with freshly made italian dressing. Nothing is bottled or canned here. The bread is warm and freshly baked. Mama's menu has all the standard italian dishes you might be craving. You can choose your favorite sauce (tomato, marinara, meat, alfredo) to go on any of the pastas they serve. I love the cheese ravioli. Don't forget to try some meatballs. One caveat - if you go late on a weekend night, or on a rainy day, there may be a large, noisy, unruly crowd at the bar spilling over into the restaurant area. You won't see this on weeknights or in the off-season. Size up the scene before you sit to see if you can deal with it.

“Food is good.”

Food was good. Service was great. But the flies were just too much. Ended up boxing our food and running out.

“Great Restaurant! Great People! Great Food!”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

You know a restaurant is good, when the place is packed ALL the time. I also visited on Memorial Day weekend like the guy below me, and I agree with what he says about the atmosphere. It was loud, and there were a lot of college aged people there who were rowdy. Unfortunately, in Dewey Beach, that was EVERY restaurant we visited that weekend. Dewey is a place were kids go to party, but that doesn't take away from the AMAZING food Mama Maria's has. The fried calamari was absolutely amazing and my gnocchi was served perfectly. The wait staff is great and always friendly and helpful. Even with as busy as it was, the staff made us feel like family. If you want pizza, or hearty dinners this is an excellent place to visit. It's a must stop destination for your vacation.
