Fort Delaware State Park was a great history lesson and Delaware City is a quaint riverfront community. Take the ferry ride from Delaware City to the fort it's very relaxing. The fort is located on little Pea Patch Island. On the day I was there they had living actors who always stay in character, it's a history buffs dream. I'm glad I took the ride!

Fort Delaware, the Union fortress dating back to 1859, once housed Confederate prisoners of war. It was originally built to protect the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia. Visitors take a ½ -mile ferry ride from Delaware City to Pea Patch Island. A jitney provides transport from the island dock to the granite and brick fortress. Here, costumed interpreters take you back to the summer of 1864. This is a great visit for families and history buffs alike. I was unaware that Confederate prisoners were housed this close to home. Much fascinating and seemingly little-known information is offered by the very engaging and personable interpreters. I highly recommend at least 1 visit for anyone interested in local, national or Civil War history. Structurally, it is similar to Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia.

We have visited the fort a few times and were thrilled to take an 11-year old nephew to see the fort. Once the officer puts on his hat at the beginning of the tour around the fort, the story of the fort comes alive as we are taken back to the Civil War and life at the fort. Some activities include the young folks, so they get a better understanding of the past. The docents are well prepared to answer questions and are true to staying in the time period. Our nephew still talks about the tour!

Very education and interesting place to visit. Staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions. The bad is the walk from the ferry to the jitney that takes you to the fort is about .5 miles so if you need help walking this can be a problem. Also the website says there is food service on the island but when you buy your ticket you find out the isn't any on the island anymore and there is no place close to go buy something if your ferry is leaving in 15 minutes. Wouldn't go back
