“The ideal place to get away from it all”

We found the cottage to be ideal for our needs. We were all very happy sitting in the garden having a beer looking at the wonderful view and watching our three Staffies run around the garden. Every day the young bullocks from the farm next door came over to visit the dogs, which we thought was funny. We all loved our time at the Badger Sett and are already planning next years return.
There was no Wi-Fi , only negative.

“Peaceful with stunning views”
Reviewed April 15, 2014 for a stay in February 2014

We (2 adults and our 3 children aged 9, 13 &15) stayed for a long weekend in Feb. The house is lovely and in a peaceful area with fantastic views from the lounge and master bedroom. We had great weather and there is plenty of walking in the area. The house itself is well equipped and both the bathroom and shower room are beautiful. The master bedroom (which is huge) has a wood burner, which was lovely to escape from the boys for an hour on an evening whilst they played on the Wii. The bedrooms are all very big rooms and the whole house was immaculate. We were very lucky as there was no one staying before us and the owners VERY kindly said we could check in early which was great. Thanks for sharing your great house we would definately stay again.

“Lovely quiet retreat with modern comfort and style”
Reviewed October 12, 2013 for a stay in October 2013

We wanted a short escape from hustle and bustle, but still needed wi-fi to keep in touch. This place offered a very stylish environment to enjoy a break away in the countryside with all the modern conveniences you would want - great tv with cinema sound and dvd'd to play, wii and ipod stereo. Surrounded by countryside and a working farm, it still has a nice enclosed garden that meant our little dog could have a run around without us worrying about him escaping into farms. Rooms are very tastefully decorated and spacious, and the slate tiled bathroom and shower room are smart and practical.

Whilst only a mile or so walk to Hesket Newmarket with its little pub, shop and tea room, we did find ourselves choosing a few trips out in the car in order to find a bit more choice and variety but it was convenient for the central lakes as well as going up to Carlisle - which we were pleasantly surprised by.

A good choice for those looking for a cottage that steps outside of the quaint and traditional chintz box.

Only negative (probably exacerbated by the time of year and that the house may not have been continually let since the summer) Despite the property being lovely and warm, there was a damp and musty smell in the largest bedroom due to some damp in the corner. Fortunately we were only two and had the other bedrooms to choose from. The owner has obviously invested heavily in doing the place up and am sure any issues like this will be remedied to keep the place on top form.

Management Response
Oct 18, 2013
Thanks for your lovely review and I'm so glad you liked our 'no chintz' approach!

I'm very sorry about the musty smell in the main bedroom but thank you for alerting us to it – it's probably due to a combination of very wet weather and a couple of weeks without guests. We are visiting next week to carry out end-of-season maintenance (and have a week's holiday) and will make sure that the root cause is dealt with.

“Great week's holiday in the Northern Lakes”
Reviewed November 22, 2012 for a stay in November 2012

We stayed at the Badger Sett in November for a week's getaway. The cottage is really well equipped from a huge tv and surround sound, to a number of films and books (including OS maps) and a lovely new fitted kitchen and bathrooms. The cottage itself is like a tardis, the pictures don't do it justice and the rooms are extremely large. While we didn't use them, the second and third bedrooms are huge, the second bedroom is bigger than any hotel bedroom we have stayed in. The master bedroom has a fireplace and a tv, neither of which we needed to use but would be great if staying with more people.

We were very impressed with the small things in the cottage which we always take ourselves to other holiday cottages but didn't need this time, for example there being filled soap dispensers and lots of cleaning products, foil/cling film etc and salt/pepper.

We visited with two dogs and the cottage didn't feel at all cramped and it was extremely clean with no evidence of dogs there before us. Our dogs like to escape but the garden was secure although they did like to bark at the sheep in the next field! I can imagine it would be lovely in sunnier times to sit outside in the garden. We found the weather was a lot better there than anywhere else we visited in the Lakes and the stars at night are amazing!

The cottage is close to Bassenthwaite and Ullswater lakes and close to Keswick, voted the most dog friendly town in Britain by the Kennel Club. It is quite a drive to the South and West Lakes but do-able for a day trip if you don't mind the drive.

If you're obsessed with texting and calling, signal is pretty low but the wifi is great. We also warn that the local shop doesn't take cards and for a big supermarket shop we can highly recommend the Morrisons in Penrith - it was like no supermarket we'd ever visited before with beautiful fresh veg constantly sprayed with little jets of water and local meats and cheeses.

Overall, a fantastic week away and hope to return.

“Just the place to unwind!”

The Badger Sett is in a lovely, peaceful, rural location - view across the valley is stunning. Nice ramble down (and up again) to the village - The Crown pub well worth a visit. Friendly people, scrummy beers from the micro-brewery, good pub food (make sure you book in advance) - and our dog was welcomed too. The cottage was very clean and extremely comfortable - had all that we required, including a Wii, many games, books and DVDs, just the job for the 12-year old in our party. The beds were so comfortable we didn't want to get up in the morning! We managed to sit ourside on two evenings and watch the sun go down! The herd of bullocks in the field surrounding the cottage were very curious - especially towards our dog. Thanks too for the bottle of wine - most welcome on our arrival! An excellent break, just what we needed.

“Beautiful accommodation, spacious and comfortable.”

We have just returned from a fantastic week away at the Badger Sett. The accommodation is really well laid out, with the living accommodation at one end of the property and the bedrooms at the other end. All the rooms are really spacious, especially the master bedroom. It was really easy to find the property and took about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there from Preston. Although the property felt remote it was within easy reach of places like Keswisk, Carlisle and Penrith. We had great fun exploring all the local villages, Calderbeck is beautiful and the village of Hesket Newmarket was only a 20 minute walk away. The local pub was a delight although if you want to eat there you should definately book a day or two in advance. Would definately recommend staying at the Badget Sett.
