“Excellent traditional English country inn”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Just returned from our third visit to the Highland Drove - we really feel at home in this place and use it to break our journey from Scotland to Yorkshire. Excellent food either in the restaurant or bar, superb range of well kept cask ales from Theakstons, Eden Brewery etc and a real country pub atmosphere. If you're looking for sanitised glass and chrome minimalism this is not for you! Hosts and staff are good humoured, welcoming and attentive and the accommodation is cosy and comfortable. The bar is well used by locals and the place is obviously a focus of life in this attractive village, so if you are early to bed and a light sleeper the distant sound of merriment from the bar and the quarter hour chimes of the church clock may intrude on your slumbers. I think that, like us, most will find them charmingly reminiscent of how things used to be in English villages throughout the land and neither managed to disturb our sleep one bit.
The Highland Drove is a traditional country pub with a good restaurant and rooms. If that's what you like, you'll like The Highland Drove. We do.

we went to the Highland Drove while cycling the c2c. We arrived just before 6pm and the place was locked up so had to go round the back and ask the chef to get someone to let us in. The accommodation was really tired and our double room could do with a good sprucing up. On the plus side the food was excellent.

A real shame as we were in great mood on the way up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and thought a stop for the night in a country pub on the way would be a pleasant contrast. The stairs up to the room had holes in the wall where light fittings had once been, the corridor had no working light , the rooms were really horrible. You would think that carpets around a toilet and in a shower room would be generally recognised as unhygienic but clearly not at the Highland Drove. We had 2 rooms - a double and a single. The double was really expensive for a sad and tired brown room , with a sign saying don't open the windows and TV reception which cut out each time you moved. The shower in the single was better ( newer and tiled) but only one light worked . TV reception had the same problem. Food was not bad but very ordinary. Don't go out of your way to go here. Understaffed but at least they noticed before finalising the bill ( cash only) that we had not drunk 14 Pints the night before and that was an error on their part.

My friend and I called in to the Highland Drove Inn on the evening of Monday, 8th July. I did not have a starter but my friend ordered mushroom soup. When it arrived it looked very thin and she said that it tasted as though it had been watered down. When asked by the waitress if everything was O.K. my friend repeated her comment but was not offered an alternative, even though she had left most of the soup. I ordered steak pie and chips but the meat was tough and mostly uneatable and the pastry was like a brick. I left three-quarters of my meal but the waitress removed my plate without enquiring why so much had been left. On the plus side both our desserts were good. We were charged full price for the soup (£3.50) and for the steak pie (£10.95).

Firstly the post code is wrong on Trip Advisor. Should be 9NA. Say. Nav. Sent me up the A6. Went to the Highland Drove for a fishing holiday. The place is well located for Penrith and the M6. The food is of a high standard and good value. The rooms are very clean, but could do with a little updating. For the price, you cannot complain. They have everything you need make your stay comfortable. I will certainly be heading there again.

Called in with friends for a quick supper without booking. First greeting when we asked if we could get food at 7pm "have you booked" and surrounded by empty tables in the upstairs food area! However, we then spoke to the lady behind the bar who organised drinks, pushed and set tables together and was charming. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Hoping to be back on the river by 8.30 was a forlorn hope. A waitress had gone home sick and our lovely lady seemed to be running everything. The steak, scampi and fish when it arrived at 8.30 was excellent but wished we had been warned about the wait on arrival. Beer, local Eden brewery, was wonderful.
We will go back, just not when we mind about how long it takes, and hope this was a one off through no fault of the staff who remained on duty.

Were looking for a 2nd (of 3) night stopover whilst cycling the C2C. This was the perfect stop before the big hills. Only slightly off the offical route on our map, and a little further so didn't feel cheated on the mileage! Warm and friendly greeting. Room was very clean and well appointed with a lovely shower to refresh after a long days cycling. Our evening meal was excellent, Paul (son of owners) and staff were very pleasant and helpful. After a good nights sleep, breakfast in the upstairs dining area was delicious. We ordered packed lunches which were well worth it as not many opportunities after Hartside which was quite early in the day. Just a shame it's not much fun eating out when it's cold/v.wet and windy!! Bikes were locked securely overnight. Nothing appeared too much trouble and would definitely recommend/stay again.
