“A quiet night on the C2C ...or not ?”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

The food and drink are very good. The landloard is friendly as are the locals, but.....they are noisy when still drinking at 01:45 in the morning. Link that to the church bells which chime every 15 minutes to the Big Ben theme....all through the night and it slightly takes the edge off it when you are tired and need to be ready for the hard climbs on the C2C the next day.
I'd go for a pint and some food if passing but I wouldn't stay there on the C2C as it was just too noisy.

Room Tip: Anywhere away from the church chimes and the locals drinking in the bar, so probably somewhere else!

Just the place for a stopover when travelling from or to Scotland or even linger longer. Spotlessly clean room. An interesting menu and well cooked, tasty food, breakfast was also superb. A relaxed atmosphere, friendly locals, helpful welcoming staff and landlord.

We stayed here for 1 night as part of the C2C bike ride coming from Penrith.

Evening meal was excellent - nice steak for £10 and good value, well kept beer and good rooms plus storage for bikes. Landlord was very friendly and helpful.

Good quality and filling breakfast before heading off into the hills!

Great Salkend is only a couple of miles off the main C2C route and this pub was well worth the detour.

We visited this pub while staying at Wetheral Cottages and what a lovely experience! The staff and locals were so friendly. The atmosphere was so relaxed and the food was second to none. Will definitely be going back for their exceptionally tasing food. What a lovely place.

Meant to review this place a long time ago ..Did coast to coast in sept last year ..turned up at the pub absolutely wet through thanks to lake district weather. Fantastic welcome..offered to dry clothes out .. Great room ..went down to bar for drink and food later on..cannot over emphasise how fantastic the couple who run this place are. They are real people who take pride in their pub. Great breakfast. By the time you leave ..you already know your going to miss the place. Hope to go back next year

I've been coming to England and Cumbria for 20 years and first ran into Higland Drove and the proprietors in the late 90s, quite by accident, but now deliberately. Food, service, and accomodation have always been first rate and now I rank this hotel as the reason for coming to Cumbria. Be sure to see Little Meg and her sisters.
Most memorable time was when Don and I sat and watched the horror of 9/11. This proprietor takes personal care of each guest as if we are the first.

Room Tip: All rooms are unique and since I've stayed in all of them, a good value. This is a working pub...

Stopped over at the Highland Drove en route to St Andrews and was so pleased to find that it was indeed the perfect stopover. If you want a comfortable room in a pub which oozes character run by the most friendly and professional owners then look no further. Oh and let's not forget the range of well kept real ales and a great wine list. And I haven't yet mentioned the food - the menu is really interesting making choosing difficult and our choices so lived up to expectations. The evening was topped watching Mo Farah win the 5000 metres in the Olympics in the bar full of cheering locals. So wish we'd stayed a few nights but there's always next time.
