“Great Night Time Viewing”

After several starts and stops the Delaware Department of Transportation finally pulled victory from the jaws of defeat. (Lots of back story here about the failed attempts to get this bridge built, but much too long for here.) Suffice it to say that the bridge is very beautiful and provides a great visual backdrop as you drive along Route 1 headed to Dewey or Bethany Beach. It shines like blue diamonds in the night and is really a striking bit of structure juxtaposed with the scrub brush and sand dunes between you and the ocean. Two lanes in each direction with a bike/hiking path along the East side makes it a great way to see the ocean or the bay from a new perspective. It makes for great photos anytime and somehow makes my spirits soar each time I see it!

This is the newest landmark structure in Southern Delaware. Very beautiful bridge. At night it is lit up with blue lights, and it sparkles from miles away!

A gorgeous new structure the Indian River Inlet Bridge is pretty both night and day. The visuals are worthy of a stop and photo opportunity. This is our Golden Gate in miniature... very miniature. For some it may simply be a highway apparatus but for those with more romantic eyes and with memories of a youth (25 years ago) spent working and living there in the summer it is a clear marker of progress and development that has occurred.

As for biking the bridge is quite capable or accommodating either a road or a safer sidewalk pass. It depends on your level of aptitude, physical and psychological comfort with your bike and traffic as to your choice. In short, it is less than a 45 degree climb that is quite easy to make for the average intermediate biker and the breeze to and fro is refreshing. I will warn that if you travel at night it is best to stay out of the road as you never know the random nature of traffic. And lastly, I would note that there are still glass and nail remnants of the last hurricane and recent construction. I punctured 2 tires on my way northbound. The first occurring 1 mile from the bridge (July 2013). Besides that... I loved it. You can see the camp areas as you approach from the south and as you continue you find the dunes and inlets for the kayaks and row boats. Beware of the famous brisk breeze... I enjoyed it and found it refreshing.

As bridges go, it is quite attractive, especially at night. It has great paths to walk or bike over it too. The area surrounding it has lots going on with fishing, beach access, marina access with a cute bar. I love it at night though, so pretty as it lights up the sky with its blue lights and red flashing lights on top. Quite a landmark.
