The food an service was excellent. However, the eating area is small and very noisy. Not a place to go for special or romantic evening.

My sister's and I like to adventure out on Saturday's and explore Connecticut and the surrounding states. Today was Middlebury, Southbury, and Woodbury Ct. You may or may not know that if you like antiquing you would like Woodbury. It's filled with antique shops. We like antique centers as you can find a usually larger shop with multiple vendors within its walls.
Our first destination was Middlebury consignments. We traveled the back roads to see what we would come across instead of the highways. It was a beautiful ride through the hills. We drove up to find a beautiful building with beautiful grounds. We did not know at first where the entry was and had to ask an employee how to get in. There are no signs for an entrance door. Once inside we came through the very lovely restaurant with it's open kitchen area with patrons sitting at a counter. The smells were wafting throughout the entire store and they had many soups and entrees available for lunch. We were on a mission for furniture today, so we didn't let the aroma get to us. We walked through the hall and into a massive room filled with many different gift items, lighting, jewelry, dishware, household beauties to beautify your home. so much to look at I did not know where to look first. Up, down, over and over there, your eyes are trying to take it all in. I had a mission today, I was looking for a foyer light fixture, I wanted something older as I am not a fan of all the new stuff out there. I have many antique fixtures in my home that I have found on our adventures. It is three floors of enjoyment. A relaxed atmosphere with no sales people coming at you. An enjoyable experience. Next we drove through Southbury and then through Woodbury and stopped at a few antique centers, found some fun things for our collections and had asked one of the employees where we could go for lunch, she suggested a few places One of them being John's cafe. We stopped and decided to go in as my sister had seen they had a zagat rating, so in we went. It was a nicer place than what we had thought it would be. We were seated right away. Three of us ordered hamburgers and one grilled vegetable sandwich. Our food arrived and the vegetable sandwich was a chicken sandwich. We had to tell the waitress that it was not what she had ordered. Out of three hamburgers ordered medium well only one was medium well, the other two were to red to pink. The fourth person had to sit and wait for her food as we went ahead with ours, as we did not want to eat a cold burger. Once her sandwich came it was huge and delicious. Overall it was a nice place, nice atmosphere. The burger plates were 13.00 and 15.00 if you had the coby beef burger.

The food is fabulous. Mid week one night my wife had a meatloaf special-the best I ever tasted. My shrimp with crab stuffing was also great. After this we returned two weeks later on a Saturday night as three couples. The food again was great but I regret to say our 7:30 reservation was not properly honored. We had to stand, not sit, for 40 minutes until seated. There was no bar seating available-only 4 chairs that were already taken.Apparently a group table overextended their stay but for $140 a couple we deserved better-at the least some decent lounge seating for this situation. I cannot trust that this would not happen again so I will not ever go back as a group larger than 4 people. I also feel that management offering to buy us a drink would have been a nice gesture but no effort to accomodate us was made.
Nonetheless the food is an eleven on a ten scale.

While spending a long day post Christmas shopping in the Southbury area my wife suggested we try Johns Cafe for a late lunch. This was my first visit and my wife's second. May I say Johns did not dissapoint. My wife ordered the lunch special grilled salmon over a fine bed of salad, an excellent choice. I had the grilled chicken sandwich with New England clam chowed, both cooked to perfection. The soup hit the spot on a cold winterey day. The wait saff was great. Johns Cafe also has a fine wine list. Can't wait for our next visit which will be for dinner. Highly recommend. Pete & Toni K
