My friend and i took a 3d2n package. we stayed in a A frame hut. it was really near the beach! its really important for me that the hut be near the white, clean beach. so for me the distance was really good. but i think you take the bigger (more expensive) huts they will be even closer to the beach. the hut was small and there was a double bed and a single bed. the toilet was pretty big though. the best thing about it is that when u shower, u can actaully hear sounds of nature: bird chirping, crickets, lizards making noise etc. lol it really made me feel like i was in another world. there's hot water, dont worry. but no soap, shampoo, toothbrush etc provided.

the beds and room was really clean. and they provided 2 new towels. no tv, fridge, kettle, safe etc so if u want those maybe Mirage is not the place for u. but its not like u will need those anyway. the room was quite dark, so best if u open the doors at all times. there was an aircon but it didnt really seem to work. but it was fine because there was a ceiling fan too.

pirates bar: when u'll have your 3 meals. there's a pool table, some board games, a dart board, books. the resort staff will ask u to join them and play everynight. and u can mingle with the other guests too thru these games. it has a really realxing atmosphere. of course, there's alcohol here too but i didnt drink any. do ask John to show u some of his amazing magic tricks after dinner, he's really skilled!

the best thing about this resort is the food....omg its really yummy!! on the first night we had rice and 4 dishes (2 fish, 1 egg, 1 veg, chinese style). really loved it! it was like a home style of cooking, but more tasty than my mum's cooking for sure! though it may be a little salty. but still delicious! breakfast was a simple affair: toast and choice of omelette or scrambled eggs. both are really tasty. simple fare but YUMMY nonetheless! and they serve breakfast till 11, so u can get up late like i did haha. lunch was fish and chips, delicious again. the best thing is that they only start cooking when you arrive at the pirates bar. so the food is served piping hot and fresh!

activities: on my first day they invited me and the other guests to go for a half day snorkelling. they have fins, masks, tubes so dun worry. the corals were pretty decent. and you can see quite a variety of fish. n sea urchins too lol. they took us to 3 different spots. other than that there's not much stuff to do. u can swim in the sea though. do take a walk and visit other resorts. aseania looks more high class, but i think the cheaper huts are further from the beach. d'coconut looks old and shabby...glad i didnt stay there.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE do not sun tan on the beach! although the staff do their best to remove sand flies on their beach, there are still some cos of the wind. i laid on their deck chair to sun tan and pretty soon i saw sandflies on my leg. the worst thing is that i didnt even feel them on me. when i brushed them off, they had already bitten me and there were red sores on my legs. its been close to 2 weeks since i returned from Besar but now i have 20 bites on my legs, arms and waist and they still itch like hell. if u want to tan i HIGHLY RECOMMEND walking to Aseania resort next door, they have this elevated deck on their beach with deck chairs, just outside their bar/restaurant. u can tan there. the aseania staff were really nice about letting me use their facility. could be because it was off peak season, so very few guests around. u will not get attacked by the sand flies. whatever it is, just dont be too close to the sand! the water is fine though.

service: excellent! great team of young, friendly staff who will do their best to make u feel welcome. great to just talk to them and chilll with them. we forgot to bring toothpaste and we asked if they could give us some. the next day, john gave us a new tube. how's that for great service! also, on our last morning, there was a centipede in our toilet. we called one of the staff (dont know his name, Indian guy) to 'rescue' us and he was really nice about it and he helped us to get rid of it. lol it wasnt a bad experience at all, we were just really amused that there was a millipede in the toilet hahaha.

i HIGHLY RECOMMEND bringing some mosquito coils to burn at night while u sleep. the first night we didnt get any bites, thanks to the really effective mosquito coil. on the 2nd night, the coil stopped burning in the middle of the night and we got bitten immediately. luckily we woke up and got the coil burning again and the mosquitos stopped coming immediately. anyway the air con doesnt really work so u dont have to worry about stinking up the room. if you take the bigger huts, u may have to burn 2 coils throughout the night.

one very minor downside was that the power went down twice during our stay. power outage is not so bad, its just that the water supply stops too. i was unlucky and the power went out while i was showering. so i had shampoo and soap all over me and no water for about 10-15 mins before the power came back lol. but to me thats a non-issue.

btw there's no wifi. if u want wifi u have to walk over to this tree house nearby and tap on Aseania's (i think) wifi. ask the staff if u need help, they will be more than happy to help!

Room Tip: bring mosquito coil. dont sun tan!!

Easy booking: Chris was always quick in responding to my queries over email. Even though we had three friends dropped out just a week before, Mirage did not ask for any penalty payment. Chris helped us to book a van from Singapore to Mersing and back for just SGD340.

Excellent service staff: The entire resort crew was extremely attentive and friendly. They always came by to check if we were comfortable, or just to chat, or to give tips when we were playing pool.

Quiet private beach: Mirage shares the same beach as other resorts (e.g. D'Coconut and Asiana) but each resort has its own beach front. Because Mirage is relatively small (capacity of 40 guest), you don't have to fight for space. My friends and I have a nice spot for the three days we were there, just by the hammock. You can get mats and cushion from the resort for free.

Good food and BBQ: For breakfast, we had pancakes, toast, scrambled eggs, sausage, and nasi lemak. For lunch and dinner, instead of a buffet spread, the eight of us would be served with dishes and rice - normally standard Asian food - stir-fry veg, chicken, sweet and sour fish, curry, omelette, etc. I'd highly recommend the BBQ dinner, the lamb was perfectly done!

Clean and spacious rooms: We had eight people - so six of us took the Lau Teng Chalet, which is a one and a half-storey house with one bathroom. It's spacious enough for seven people (though Mirage says you can go up to eight). It's cool to have everyone under one roof, though you do need to share one bathroom.

Payment: Only slightly inconvenient bit is you need to pay the deposit by cash or transfer. And when you are at the resort, they only accept cash. So they don't accept credit card. But considering it's such a small resort, I can understand why.

Room Tip: Lau Teng is great for a group of six to eight pax

Awesome weekend getaway from Singapore! Group of approx 20 expats + locals caught the 20min boat out to the island. Beach Volleyball, frisbee, swimming, pool, board games (provided) are about the main activities available. Perfect weekend getaway but hardly a MUST SEE if you travel through malaysia.

Service is excellent and efficient, everyone at the resort speaks brilliant english and are helpful + friendly and are clearly experienced and good at what they do. Celebrated a birthday and they got complimentary cakes for us. In return we consumed approx 50shots (not short of alcohol there clearly ;)). Ask for the special sealed shot from Switzerland :) Special mention goes to Dave and the due with the cool necklace who's name I never got!

Food is amazing as well. All meals provided for and of pretty good standards. Water, coffee, tea, milo, supplied all day. Dinner was a fabulous outdoor BBQ which the lot of us really enjoyed.

I'd definitely head back at some point with another group of friends, could well imagine different crowds all enjoying this resort .

We stayed 5 days / nights on this resort (we'd planned only 3 nights but decided to stay longer...)
The place is isolated, between the forest and the sea, calm and perfectly taken care of... Chalets are small and basic, but very clean and with AC, a small terrace overlooking the sea... just perfect !
The staff is amazingly nice and attentive... Unlike other resorts in the area, you don't pay for the extra activities, snorkelling kits are at your disposal for free... Bottles of fresh water available for free at the bar...
The beach is very clean, perfect for sunbathing... Just notice that swimming is a bit difficult during low tide, except if you walk along the beach towards deeper spots... but the water is amazingly clear and HOOOOT...
The bar/reception is perfect for a shadow break after hours on the beach, with nice big sofa to lay on...
Just don't forget books, sunblock, and mosquito repellant !

A 20/20 to the staff for its kindness and the good care given to cleanliness and calm !!

Tucked away from a quiet town named Mersing in the state of Johor, Malaysia, lies an island called Pulau Besar, by speedboat, takes approximately 25min.

The girls and I made reservations to stay at this resort called Mirage Island Resort. At first glance, it was a very basic attap-like resort with the bare essential amenities, just a small room filled with soft plushy beds, a decent shower room and a nice front porch overlooking the sea (we got the sea view chalet). It doesn't come with a television though, so bring along a few good reads and lots of suntan lotion to occupy your time.

There's not much of an entertainment here, besides the picturesque-like never ending blue skies and clear water beach , its glorious sunset scattered with fishing boats heading home after a hard days work. Best of all, the resort front of office is combined into a huge hut like style, with the dining hall, bar and comfy sun beds for you encompassed together to while away your time.

One would really feel like home especially with the attentiveness of the staff, always making sure you're well taken care of, attending to you with friendly hospitality. Mankurro, I would assume, is the owner, goes all out to make your stay a very pleasant one indeed.

Many thanks to the staff of Mirage Island Resort, who has made out stay an extremely pleasurable one indeed. Be sure to pop by Mirage Island Resort if you ever happen to visit Pulau Besar.

P.s remember to bring along insect repellant as one of your essentials! The mosquitoes here are utterly impossible!
