“Nice stop”
Review of Strandarkirkja

Nice little church with a story. And a place to spot birds or seals and whales in the sea (we spotted one, spraying water...got lucky).
If you're not in the direct neighbourhood it's not worth the trip.

We stopped to see this small church on our visit to the Reykjanes Peninsula on our way to the Blue Lagoon.

The church sits on a small hill overlooking the sea. It is beautiful in its simplicity. We were able to see the elegant interior. There are sweeping views of the countryside. You can easily climb up the adjacent sea wall for nice views of the coast and tidal pools. A sculpture called Landsyn, (Land in Sight) stands by Strandarkirkja in honor of the church's founding by sailors who safely returned home to Iceland following a storm.

The church is so pretty and is just quaint. It's a small church that has had a congregation since 1200. It is right on the ocean and is just a great place to visit.

This church sits alone in a wild and dramatic setting. It can be seen from highway 437 a few kilometres west of Eyrarbakki. There is a 2 km road into the church. Depending of the weather, the setting can be beautiful or dark and dramatic. Be sure to have a look over the rock sea wall to watch the waves crashing on the shore. Please remember, the church and cemetery are sacred places.

This beautiful little church is a little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The coastal location is amazing and the story behind the church is charming. A little gem!
