“An unassuming giant killer.”

The Oriental Cafe in Willimantic is a true gem. In a converted old Arby's or something, it looks sketchy from the outside, but inside it is warm, nicely decorated, and even intimate. A bar with a couple of tv's lines one wall, separated by traditional rice-paper screens and very tasteful woodwork and decor. The small dining room is overlooked by the sushi bar, which offers seating for six or eight people. The dining room is dark and cozy. Seating is close, but not so much as to be uncomfortable.

The real star here is the food. This is not, per se, a sushi bar. It's not Japanese or Thai or Chinese. It's a bit of each, and they do all of it very well. It's great for a group, because one can order a Bento Box of tempura and sushi, while another can order some spicy Thai food, while yet another gets noodle soup. Sushi and sashimi are available a la carte. There is a variety of soups and appetizers (nothing unusual; some great dumplings, a tempura veggie plate, but the selection is good).

The best deal in town, as of this writing: every afternoon, up until 6:00, any of their house Special sushi and rolls are half price. This is a great deal. They have a full bar with some very good special martinis.

The service is usually friendly, but you can find yourself having to flag down your server for attention. That's not usually a problem, because the place is pretty small. Oh, and about my reference to "giant killer." We have long relied upon another well known Asian, uh...bistro...in the area, which has a few locations. Never been overly impressed, but we had no other choices. Oriental Cafe changes the game. They don't have showy hibachis or fancy dining rooms. But they offer a variety of wonderful Asian food at good prices. Highly recommended.

Definitely the freshest sushi in the area and the best Pad Thai! I'm normally hesitant of places that incorporate so many different styles of food in their menu (Thai, Japanese and Chinese), but this place pulls it off!

Went with 11 others for dinner and overall it was a pleasant dining experience. Only a few letdowns and mostly good quality. Rolls and appetizers solid but not to die for. Some had traditional chinese and rice, lowmein and G Tso were all good. Pineapple fried rice with shrimp was very good for $10. Atmosphere meets family, couples and quaint bar nicely. Staff was courteous but a tad understaffed as the meals came out too far apart. Overall quality fresh food at reasonable prices.

We have gotten take-out from this place a couple of times, and today decided to sit down for lunch. They have all the standard Chinese fare, plus a handful of Thai and Japanese dishes and sushi. We have tried a couple of Chinese and Thai dishes and soups and everything has been excellent and fresh. In particular the spicy mango Thai tofu is great, as are the hot & sour and egg drop soups. Prices are fair too.

Don't be fooled by the location and underwhelming interior... It's worth a try!

I believe this restaurant used to be a fast food/D'angelos grinder type establishment. They have not done much to the outside and upon first glance you will want to continue to drive by and eat somewhere else.

Be brave, park and go inside. It is very pretty inside and calming with different colored lights and beaded dividers.

Our server was very nice and efficient. The food was delicious and the sushi very fresh
