Attraction details
Owner description: Reimagining itself in recent years, Westport Country Playhouse is rapidly emerging as a nationally recognized professional theater. Under the artistic direction of Mark Lamos and management direction of Michael Ross, the Playhouse creates five live theater experiences, produced at the highest level, from April through November. Its vital mix of works---dramatic, comedic, occasionally exploratory and unusual---expands the audience’s sense of what theater can be. The depth and scope of its productions display the foremost theatrical literature from the past---recent as well as distant---in addition to musicals and premieres of new plays. During the summer, the Playhouse is home to the Woodward Internship Program, renowned for the training of aspiring theater professionals. Winter at the Playhouse, from November through March, offers events outside of the main season---Family Festivities presentations, Script in Hand play readings and a Holiday Festival. In addition, businesses and organizations are encouraged to rent the handsome facility for their meetings, receptions and fundraisers

“Not Thrill”
Reviewed August 2, 2013

It is sad to see that this center for arts is going down the hill. The place is a mess and the play are not that interesting. Added the prices of the tickets...not thrill at all.

“Charming, Convenient, Historic Cultural Resource”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The Westport Playhouse was one of the early high quality professional regional theaters made famous by the long list of actors living in the area, including Westport residents Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward who is still on the Board. It is a beautiful, renovated country barn facility, accessible to the top NYC and regional talent it books, and its audience, by MetroNorth commuter rail, travelers and area residents. The quality of the performances is superb, so it's only a question of choosing which repetoire you prefer in their active summer, and off season family offerings performance schedule.

Thank you for reviewing the Playhouse. We are very proud of our 80+ years of history and the wonderful actors who have graced our stage, and we're proud to be continuing the legacy of the arts in Fairfield County. Thanks too for covering both our Season shows and our Winter at the Playhouse offerings.

“The show off”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

A very interesting play taking place in the 1930's. Even though it was written so many years ago , still holds true today. The Westport play house is a great setting for this play. Am planning to see the next play "Loot".

“Wonderful Historic Theater”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

We so enjoy going to this theater, and have been season ticket holders for years. They do small productions, but, we are never disappointed, and we are theater buffs who regularly go to Broadway shows. The grounds are lovely any time of year, and there really are no bad seats. We have enjoyed some good shows, some of which ended up going to Broadway. The WCP is definitely a local treasure.

“Excellent theater in out town”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

the Dining Room opened the Playhouse seaso. Ihave seen three Gurney plays at the Playhouse and all captured the upper middle class WASP experience. Mark Lamos, made another good choice to open the season and provided his usual high quality work. the Playhouse continues to be high quality New York theater without going to new York. People who are reluctant to go to the Playhouse because they remember the old summer stock productions and the holes in the wall of the old barn need to buy a subscription to one of Westport's real cultural assets. It's great to travel 10 minutes and get a classy production, high quality acting, and a real entertaining evening for a reasonable price.
