“great location if travelling with kids”
Reviewed December 16, 2008

We went with my toddlers for a week through a RCI timeshare situation. it is a beautiful site. We went to the beach almost daily and let the kids play in the sand. It was quite brisk, so no water time. Unlike prior reviews, everyone was quite polite and pleasant. They did an informational breakfast session on the first day and gave out a lot of information about nearby restaurants and attractions. For late October, the timeshare units were booked. From what I can tell very few of the timeshare villas look out on the water, but are convenient to walk down. We parked near our villa and didn't need to use the golfcarts to unload. The unit is small for a family, but probably fine for a couple. Overall the unit is average to below average from my experience in the timeshare situation. The kitchenette is barely workable, but there is decent room service. HOWEVER, the location is wonderful for children. Apple picking, pumpkin patch, foliage, shopping, the Essex train station, Mystic Aquarium/seaport, Peabody natural history museum are all within 30 minutes! So I highly recommend the region. If you aren't part of timeshare and are travelling with kids, would stay someplace else.

Nice hotel, despite a very small room...must have been a closet in another life!

Surprising that the hotel would not include a B&B rate at these prices. We skipped their breakfast and just went for something quick at the coffee/snack bar.

Pool/whirlpool/sauna was a benefit, as the weather was not so great for outdoor swimming. Five minute walk down to the beach area, but note that you cannot walk that far along the beachfront (as either side is private property).

Ensure you check your bill thoroughly, as ours contained bar tabs from other customers (which caused delays while they had to find receipts, check signatures, etc).

Ending with a massage in the spa was a nice way to end the stay. Friendly staff.

Water's Edge is the perfect place to go - for any occasion. I've visited this location for meetings - 3 days in 2001. My daughter just had her wedding there this month. The food was excellent and the staff did everything they could to make us feel welcome! The price is not cheap; however, I firmly believe that we got what we paid for. I would recommend this location for any function - however, you must book well enough in advance.

Rooms are definitely in need of upgrade (bathroom fixtures broken, old fixtures, hotel guidebook that still lists Pan Am and TWA in airlines).
For my two night stay, was charged for two nights of "housekeeping gratuity," even though room was never serviced. When I asked for room service at 6pm and nothing had happened upon my 9pm arrival, was told by front desk that, "housekeeping leaves at 2:30pm and doesn't speak English!"

Friends gave us a gift certificate for Wateres Edge "Ultimate Package" which has a $400 value. Its entitled us to the best accomodations for one night, Saturday night dinner, Sunday brunch and all gratuities. We had the certificate for about 14 months because every time we called to book for a Saturday night through Sunday checkout, we were told nothing was available for the "Ultimate Package." Finally, to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I called again, once again was told nothing was available, but, after I asked for any accomdations, not necessarily the best, I confirmed the package. When we checked in, we were pleasantly surprised that a "condo" was available. This is a unit that sleeps six, has a bedroom, kitchen and living room, with one bath. It was in meticulous condition and had a water view. Water's Edge, formerly "Bill Hahn's" prior to 1983, is a resort that dates back to at least the 1930's and has the waterfront on Long Island Sound in Westbrook Connecticut, including a beach. It has evolved into a prominent wedding facility, time share establishment and hotel. Despite several weddings taking place during our one night stay, we were not overcrowded or made to feel we were unimportant. To the contrary, we enjoyed a superb dinner on the Saturday night of the stay with excellent service. We sat out on the beach and on the patio for a drink, with a band. The Sunday brunch was about the best we've seen. It was not nearly possible to try every selection. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would strongly recommend this hotel and property to couples and families. It is pricey but you do get what you pay for. Check out the many packages and different accomodations.

Let me preface this review by saying that we were married at Water's Edge and have visited there every year since (5+) summers.

We found that year after year, the property itself, the rooms in particular have fallen behind the curve. The rooms are passable but old. In my travel experience rooms that are $300+ a night with a 2 night minumum stay should have plasma t.v.'s, mini fridges and the like. Carpets were frayed and the paint was not crisp. This may seem picky but if you're paying $300 plus that is what you should expect. The beds are just o.k., again not up to the Starwood heavenly bed standard of high end hotel rooms.

On particular issue of note is the service. Service is spotty at best, leaning towards the poor side. We found the staff, particularly the supervisor/manager at the outside patio bar/grille to be difficult and entirely unprofessional. He treated us as though we were doing him a favor eating his $20 mini pizza and drinking his $10 drinks.

In the same price range is the new MGM Grand tower at Foxwoods and the Norwich Inn and Spa, all within a 30 minute drive. All that said the location, outside grounds, beach and view are hard to beat. Water's Edge - update your rooms, look at who you have in management positions and keep me as a guest!!!
