I must say at the beginning of this review that this is my 3 or 4 time staying in the superb Captain Stannard House Inn. When my wife told me she made reservations I could not wait. I could feel the stress of the world begin to melt away in anticipation. We did our last trip over the summer and I would like to plan something around the fall and holiday season (hint, hint, to wife!.) We drove from NY through the small towns of sea side Connecticut observing the ocean, boats, sea gulls, and restaurants. Pulling up to the Inn you see this beautifully maintained Inn that beckons the era of sea going ship captains and the romance of the sea. Driving through the stone gate I always have to decide whether to enter via the West side foyer, paneled in 18 inch wide American chestnut or the grand porch with is southern style paddle ceiling fans that intends the entire back of the Inn. As we enter we are greeted by a wave of old world charm, dark wood, conformable furniture, book lined shelves, and a pitcher of chilled ice tea. If Jim, Mary or Helen are not in the front room there is a little button to ring a bell in the kitchen, where I learned they spend most of the days preparing, planning and generally entertaining friends who stop over. We are given a key to one of the rooms, my wife’s’ favorite is Room 1, with its queen side brass bed, writing desk, chairs, dresser and as always, plated on the dresser, two large specialty cookies of the day waiting to be consumed. All the rooms that we have stayed in have been similarly appointed. Air conditioned, private baths and the best feature is NO TV. You can make arrangements for one but try it without. Breakfast is around 9-ish or so, in the main dinning room. The food is excellent. I have to say that I have had my breakfast eggs in 7 major countries and always favor Jim’s. Breakfast is accompanied by juice, coffee, fruit, homemade bread, or scones. (I’m waiting for their recipe book to be published!!). After breakfast you can retire to the grand porch, read the morning paper, dig in to the book you been waiting to read, or take a walk to the beach for some sun.

Take a browse thought their web site http://www.stannardhouse.com/ to see the pictures.

Just need to get away for a mid week refresher, weekend getaway, private wedding or just time away from the hustle and bustle I recommend the Stannard House in Westbrook Ct.

Here is a review if you're trying to decide about where to stay in Westbrook.

The Captain Stannard:
- Is perfectly located a block from the beach & a 4 min. drive from a nice, easy hike in the Salt Meadow National Wildlife Refuge
- Is very nicely furnished, has lots of space for games/playing pool/sitting and reading, a lovely little dining room for breakfast, and a glorious back porch with rocking chairs and tables
- Has some of the nicest & most accomodating people running it and working there
- Felt like our home away from home without being snooty or overdone
- Has nice, clean rooms/bathrooms with plenty of space and just enough sunlight shining through in the mornings
- Provides really yummy breakfasts too that included at least some fruit each day, some yummy baked bread, and a hot item (awesome crepes one day and a frittata the next)

It was about $200/night, which is similar to the Westbrook and other inns nearby, and we were SO thrilled we picked this gem. The westbrook is across the street and looks shabby even from the outside. Captain Stannard is probably my favorite B&B that we have stayed in, and we've been to ones all over the East coast. Please come stay and enjoy!

We arrived and were just stunned by the beauty of the house, the foyer and the front lobby. There were welcoming notes everywhere communicating clearly where everything was. We could help ourselves to complimentary coffee, tea, iced tea, water, soda, computer use, printer, etc.etc.etc
Then the brownies. Whew. In our room was waiting complimentary Perrier, a note with our names on it welcoming us, and the loveliest brownie I've ever had. I went down to print out directions and went to the laptop, looked up google maps, printed them out and skibbled back up to bed in five minutes flat.
Breakfast the next morning was delicious - frittata with fresh orange juice. Lovely conversation on the beautiful deck and a sweet, adorable grandchild being shy.
We can't wait to go back!

We stayed here with four other couples! We were pampered but left alone to enjoy each others company. The rooms were beautiful, elegant yet simple, clean and bright and the entire inn was inviting!

The best part - was the added treat that greeted us after a long day! A FLOURLESS BROWNIE! left with an adorable note on the table next to the bed. Absolutely an unbelievable treat!

We will return and we will be suggesting this to anyone who will listen!

Great job!

A perfect place for a romantic getaway. From the fresh baked brownies in your room upon arrival to the delicious breakfast, every part of our stay was just wonderful. The staff were warm and welcoming, taking every step to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Our room was absolutely beautiful - very clean and well-appointed. This most certainly will become a yearly tradition.
