The best things about Bill's Place are not the food, which is fairly average. The location on the Patchogue River and the rotating series of live bands are what really make this a great little joint. We danced to rockabilly and big band sounds (believe it... a 22 piece band inside by the bar), and sometimes there's a Dixieland jazz ensemble.
This summer the lobster rolls were generous, the fries crisp. So that's an improvement over years past. Vegetarians will have little choice... baked potato, mesclun salad... that's about as adventurous as they go in this fish and chips type menu. All served on disposable plates. Nothing classy here.
The waitresses are friendly but so overworked we always end up paying a different one. Sometimes they don't get the order quite right, too. Perhaps that's what really sums the place up... casual, friendly, food not important.
