My husband is not a fan of Mexican food but he was such a sport he thought he'd give it a try. This was our first time at this Restaurant. When we told the waitress that my husband had certain allergies, the manager came out to get more information about my husband's allergy to mayonnaise and mustard. He then came back to let us know that the food my husband ordered would be fine. The food was so delicious and the service was wonderful! My picky husband agreed to going back to this restaurant. This is the best Mexican restaurant I've been too.

“Hit or Miss Upscale Mexican”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

Our first and only visit to Besito served to answer the question: what exactly can (or should) a restaurant do to elevate a humble but excellent national cuisine to the level of fine dining? The answer, as it turned out, seems to be "not much." Take some traditional dishes, throw in a few exotic ingredients, and you get something considerably less for your efforts.

The Queso Fundido served up front as our appetizer gave a clue as to how the evening was going to go: the usual blend of melted cheeses was embellished with a colorful blend of shredded rajas, onions, red and green peppers, and garnished with a meager amount of burnt crumbled chorizo. The presentation looked great, but the whole was considerably less than the sum of its parts. I have had far better at far more humble establishments.

The enchiladas mole poblano was another mixed success: the mole sauce, always a tricky preparation for most establishments to pull off, was actually really excellent. Unfortunately, it barely served to cover up the fact that the flour tortillas were rather dry, tough, and odd-tasting, and the chicken was flavorless, dried out, and unevenly shredded with some large chewy pieces.

Perhaps the most interesting and original dish sampled was a Tamale de Elote, a deconstructed presentation with corn-off-the-cob kernels and little if any corn masa. laced with minced shrimp in a searing but somewhat watery chipotle cream sauce, and served in a corn husk. Definitely not a traditional recipe, but a teasing sample of what upscaled Mexican cuisine might aspire to be. Unfortunately, one successful dish does not a great meal make.

The menu is not overly large, and one might hope that they could get at least a few more dishes optimized. The wine and beer lists were nothing interesting or unusual. A number of standard Mexican commercial beers were available by the bottle, with nothing whatsoever on draught. The bottle of Dos XX Amber served was stale and well past its shelf life. Our waiter was pleasant enough but rather inattentive and considerably rough around the edges. I rarely tip less than 20%, but I did this time -- I did not feel compelled to reward incompetence.

“Gourmet Mexican”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

Per my husband's request, we took him to Besito this past Sunday for Father's Day. It was a very good meal. The table-side guacamole is very good. The portions are large and the chips and salsa are filling. My daughter ordered the flautas as her main and the waitress talked her into ordering an extra one - it was too much food and made us feel a little taken advantage of. I ordered the tilapia and it was overcooked - tough and kind of dry.

We had a guest visiting with us from TX and the wait staff brought us some extra sides which was very nice - they were all very good. All in all, it was a good meal.

“Best guacamole in CT!”

Get atmosphere! Everything on the menu is tasty. I suggest the steak or chicken tacos! They come in a small skillet already sliced with poco and amazing melted cheese. AND you get churros to go for FREE! Top tier Mexican food!

“Outstanding food. Chilly service.”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is our second visit, with a group of four, including two adults and two older teens. The tableside guac is excellent. The Mexican dishes seem authentic, like I have had in Mexico city and not just Tex Mex. The atmosphere is the same way - very upscale. Only downside was the waitstaff seemed distant and a little put out, but nevertheless efficient. Two wore a constant scowl, and the third just didn't connect. Be prepared to drop a few pesos here. It was about $180 with tip for four people.
