Arumeru is a good, but not exciting lodge, located between the International Airport and Arusha.
The rooms are quite nice, without being anything special. Likewise the grounds, whilst not extensive are pleasant and now well established. The food and service are fine, not the best on our trip, but nevertheless perfectly ok. The River aspect in the title may give a false impression, as there is no river views to be had!
We didn't fall in love with this lodge and would only return if it happened to be included in safari, as our focus will always be getting to the Serengeti!
There are a some Dik- Diks in the grounds and like-wise a few guinea fowl, worth a photo or two.
The Owners do take an active interest in the welfare of their guests, to their credit.

Room Tip: Ask to be near to the main area, if you have walking difficulties, as the rooms are spread out.

I've stayed at the Arumeru River Lodge three times over the last three years. The lodge and staff has gotten better over the three years. The grounds are wonderful with a beautiful refreshing swimming pool, exotic plants and dik dik and guinea fowl running around freely. When you arrive you are usually met with cold drinks and warm towels as a welcome. I was very surprised that this didn't happen when we were driven to the hotel after our flight from the US and later learned the power had been out for a while.

The staff and management is wonderful and tries to see to your every need. They have a buffet breakfast with a short order egg cook with everything from fruit, fruit juice, potatoes, steamed tomatoes to sausage and bacon to good Tanzanian coffee and tea. The manager lives at the lodge and tries to keep everything well-maintained which is tough in Africa's harsh climate.

There were a couple outside issues that made this visit less enjoyable than I remember from before. There is now a mosque that blasts over a loud speaker that can be heard throughout the lodge grounds, it starts at 5am on some mornings. There is a disco that played music late into the night a few nights that could be heard from the rooms. As you might have noticed from the name of this place, there is a river close by. We sat outside and a few of us had quite a few bug bites on our legs. We sat inside on the last night we were there and the bites diminished.

Overall, we liked the Arumeru River Lodge and will choose either this or the Serena Mountain Village lodge as our starting/ending points for future safari.

Arumeru River Lodge is, as others have said, an oasis. It is an oasis of luxury from the rather downbeat housing and landscape which most Tanzanians encounter every day just outside the gated property and one should be grateful for the privilege of staying in such a place. Of course, it provides employment and no doubt income for the extended family as well as taxes for government, but the non-Tanzanian owners must surely profit more. The grounds are splendid. Extensive lawns are fringed by flowering plants and bushes and some quite magnificent trees and frequented by guineafowl and dik-diks. The cottage accomodation is very comfortable, with a large room and bathroom and simple yet very effective African artefacts and decoration. The main reception/restaurant/bar is open-sided and a lovely place to relax. Food, too, is excellent. The staff were very friendly, very helpful and one of the Lodge's greatest assets. Overall, a great place to stay, but do take the opportunity for a walk in the local area, through the bush, even if the security guard has to get permission to let you out!

We spent one night and a full day at Arumeru on either end of our safari. It was a delightful place to crash after the long flights to get there and a great place from which to start our safari in Tarangire. We had a day room to clean up and prepare to leave from KIA on our last night as well.

It's a nice, tropical atmospher with birds, tiny lizards and dik diks running all over the place. One of us cooled off in the pool, which was a welcomed relief when the mid-day heat got to us.

The rooms are good sized and our twin beds were comfortable. It is quiet, clean and comfortable, despite not having air conditioning. The ceiling fan worked well enough to keep us cool overnight.

The food ended up not being as good as some of the other places we stayed during the trip, but it was still adequate.

We were only able to get wi-fi in the lobby area, not in the rooms. I'm not sure if that is by design or something wasn't working.

I'd stay here again mainly due to the excellent location. It just seemed to work out perfectly with our itinerary.

We stayed at the Arumeru River Lodge for two nights after arriving from KIA airport and recovering from jet lag before we began our Northern Tanzania safari. The grounds were absolutely beautiful, with dik dik wandering the grounds and spectacular landscaping. The cottage was only mediocre -- of small but adequate size, it looked like it sorely needed refurbishing. It was not well decorated and the bathroom looked a bit shabby. The new manager was also a bit arrogant although surfacely polite. I don't think I would stay here again, if I return to the area.

We arrived after 3:00 in the morning and went straight to bed, so we really didn't get a chance to inspect the property upon arrival. Luckily, it was a pretty quick trip from the airport (maybe only 15 or so minutes?). Only when waking up the next day did we find out just how gorgeous the grounds were. Magnificently landscaped, beautiful flowers everywhere, mango and banana trees, and all nicely spread out.

We woke up just in time to have breakfast and the staff could not be any nicer. There was one other couple sitting outside eating and came over to sit with us for a bit and say hello. As it turned out, this youngish German couple were the owners of Arumeru - they've only owned it for the last couple of years. They were very friendly and you could tell how much pride they took in the property. They even live at the lodge. Of course, everything about the well-maintained property showed how much they cared, and the staff was so friendly, as friendly as any we encountered during our safari.

We didn't do a heck of a lot during our lone full day before beginning the safari. We walked about the lush grounds, we stared at the zebras and wildebeest on the neighboring property, we stared at the guinea fowl and did diks on the lodge property, and we rested after more than 24 hours of flying from the US. And we checked out the main building and it was really beautifully decorated with a strong African accent.

About our only other activity was dinner as we decided not to bother leaving the property. We had some fish I can't recall, served in a curry sauce. While the fish was overcooked, the curry was spectacular . . . one of the two best I had on the whole trip, the best being one served at Dunia Camp in the Serengeti. As for the overcooked fish, we eventually learned that meats and fish are unfortunately almost always overcooked. We also had some lovely fruit for dessert.

Overall, we loved Arumeru and would definitely make this our starting point again when beginning a safari. Although our safari operator (Roy Safaris) owns and recommends a hotel in Arush (African Tulip), we preferred the idea of a resort of sorts, and upon seeing the grounds, we knew we had made the right choice.

We stayed for 2 nights at Arumeru in December 2012 before going on safari. We arrived after a long fight from Auckland , had a delcious dinner and slept. The gardens are gorgeous with little Dik Dik and guinea fowl. After a day out we returned for a swim and a beer around the pool. Just lovely.
Our rooms were a good size and the room were well appointed around the grounds. Arumeru is at usa River off the main Moshi Arusha road. Very quick to get on the way to Arusha and beyond.
If I go to tanzania again I will definitely stay at Arumeru.
